   Designed and printed a custom desk organizer using Blender and PLA - Hey everyone, I wanted to share a recent project I finished to get some feedback from the community. I’ve been using a base Ender 3 for a while now, and up until recently, I was mostly printing pre-made models from Printables and Thingiverse. I finally decided to step into designing my own stuff, so I modeled a custom desk organizer in Blender to make my junk drawer less junky. Since I’m just printing with standard PLA, I sliced it in Cura using pretty stock settings, 0.2mm layer height with a 15% gyroid infill for a good balance of strength and print time. The print took about eight hours overall, and surprisingly, the Ender 3 handled the overhangs without needing supports. After it finished, I spent some time clean-up sanding the layer lines on the outer walls using 220 up to 400 grit sandpaper to give it a smoother finish. It’s definitely not a perfect print, but i was aiming for more function over appearance. For those of you who design your own functional prints, do you have any tips on tolerancing for interlocking parts when modeling in Blender?

   You can try and look into the OrcaSlicer Image Map fork. I think it would work well for this. The documentation is a little sparse though. They have written some instructions on how to prepare the model and texture with Blender before importing into the slicer.

   How to dither print this model with B&W filaments? - I want to create small B&W prints of my dog based off this scan. I've (somewhat) fixed this model in blender, but the resulting OBJ isn't being picked up by Orca. Alternatively a working STL doesn't have color, and trying Ditherforge gave me too hard a model to print. Any way I can "3D posterize" to only use 2 colors?

   I would recommend you show him the design side, also, via TinkerCAD, or if he's got a more artistic bent as well as craftsman, something better for sculpting - Blender, Fusion? Not sure. He might be very excited to design exactly what he wants, as well as being able to download and print something. I'm less than a decade younger, and I still feel good on a day like today when Im working on an nice enclosure for BT adapters in our school's Fitness Room.

   I had a blast sculpting this pumpkin in Blender. My kid is absolutely obsessed with it (the glow in the dark filament might be a reason). Hopefully you'll like it :
