Because gas used to cost less than a dollar per litre, and when it first started going over a dollar it would waver back and forth between being over and under. So we continued showing the price in cents instead of dollars because that's what everyone was used to. It also allows them to more easily display the fact that gas isn't just 142 cents, it's 142.2 cents. How do you show that using dollars? Displaying 1.42.2 would be worse.

What do they display where you live? I assume America since they usually do weird stuff with units lol. I have travelled to a lot of countries and have never seen anything other than full currency + cents
