   Japan's been in the year 2000 since 1985 and are still there. Paper, faxes, business cards, they are *way* behind the tech curve at this point. Partly their inherent conservatism and economic troubles and partly their aging population.

   I can assure you, meishi koukan absolutely still exists and is still the soup du jour here in Japan. Perhaps you're working with the international relations arm of Japanese companies, and they've realized that business cards aren't very relevant in western business. But here in Japan they are absolutely, 100%, totally still a thing.

   This is pure novelty. True polite business etiquette in Japan would not allow for you to flip out a business card like this, unless you were involved in a particular industry - like these people seem to be. Infrared exchange was popular in the 2000s in informal settings as a way to swap personal contact information. This was at a time when Galapagos phones (that had IR capability) were still ubiquitous. It was not used in formal business situations; that has always, and will always be a physical exchange (名刺交換). Source: Have been exchanging business cards in Japan for 20 years. Gimmicks don't fly.

   In Japan, a business card exchange is a BIG deal in a meeting. IIRC, it's basically their equivalent of a firm handshake and eye contact to a boomer. I could see this being a huge hit if you're meeting with a toy company or somethig.
