If a hard fork happens you get both coins so I’d sell the coin I don’t believe in

I am not sure I understand what you mean a soft fork will also fork out. I understand a soft fork to be an optional update to the protocol or how miners mine but ultimately still using the same token whereas a hard fork will reject the token and functionally create a new token. Like I don't think segwitz resulted in a new token but increased security or something like that. I'm definitely not an expert on forking, so I'm not sure what replay protection is.

This is not exclusive to hard fork, soft forks with insufficient support can and will also fork out. You are also forgetting to mention about replay protection.

you should self custody regardless of any soft/hard fork, that's one of the main rules of bitcoin

Firstly, there's (currently) no hard fork planned. Secondly, you don't have to worry about losing coins if you're not transacting. Most likely this chain split will only last a few hours or days before dying and then any risk of transaction replay will also dissipate.
