   You have to stop the metal plunger from piercing the paper. The result is cleaner than standard FP but retains more body than pour over because you are not filtering twice

   a bit of silt is normal with a french press tbh, the metal mesh just can't catch the really fine bits. but you can cut it down a LOT: - after the 4 min steep, stir the crust and scoop the foam off the top, then leave it another 5 mins or so. the fines sink to the bottom - when you press, only push the plunger down to the surface of the coffee, not all the way. it's just there to stop grounds going in your cup - pour slowly and leave the last bit in the pot, that's where most of the sludge is if your grinder makes a lot of dust even on coarse (blade grinders defo do), that adds to it too. the james hoffmann french press video goes through this, worth a watch here

   It may just be me but many into coffee flinches when I say that my daily driver beans is a blend, both when it comes to origin and roast level. What i use is a 60/40% blend of light and medium roast. The light roast is African while the medium roast is Central American. I've tried to improve on it over the years but I end up back with that blend. There are single source beans that come very close though. Everyone coming over for coffee asks "what is that?". And when I tell them I can see a little frown. I'd like to add that I use either a super automatic or pour.over. The blend wins, or has been so far. Why are blends not really considered, or am i hanging out with the wrong crowd? 😎

   Do cuppings yourself! Compare origins, roast levels, roasters/roast profiles, processes, etc. and take the brew method out of the equation. Get a few coffee curious friends together and 5 different coffees, and host a fun cupping session.
