   a bit of silt is normal with a french press tbh, the metal mesh just can't catch the really fine bits. but you can cut it down a LOT: - after the 4 min steep, stir the crust and scoop the foam off the top, then leave it another 5 mins or so. the fines sink to the bottom - when you press, only push the plunger down to the surface of the coffee, not all the way. it's just there to stop grounds going in your cup - pour slowly and leave the last bit in the pot, that's where most of the sludge is if your grinder makes a lot of dust even on coarse (blade grinders defo do), that adds to it too. the james hoffmann french press video goes through this, worth a watch here

   We have a lidded stainless steel compost on the sink's drain board. We just smack the French press over the bucket. Most all the coffee grounds fall right out. The sink strainer gets the little bit that is left.

   Some silt is normal with a French press, since the mesh lets the finest particles through no matter how coarse the grind is. A few things cut it down a lot: After about 4 minutes, stir the crust, skim off the foam, then wait another 5 minutes or so before pressing so the fines settle to the bottom. Only push the plunger down to just below the surface instead of all the way. Pour slowly and leave the last bit in the pot. If you're using a blade grinder, a burr grinder also makes far fewer fines.

   What I normally did was make French press normally, then used a mesh strainer in the sink to rinse the grounds out of the press itself. Once the grounds dry out you can tap them into your trash! That said, I eventually moved to Aeropress and it's way less hassle

   There are a few reverse French presses out there — French pulls, so to speak. Much neater.
