   The dampers on the vents let you control the mix of which rooms get the most air. A lot of people run them all wide open, so you can't add more to a room that isn't getting enough. You need to create more flow in the hot rooms and since you can't increase flow there you need to reduce it elsewhere. That pushes more air into the remaining wide open rooms, and also, forces the thermostat to run the AC more since that room won't cool as fast.

   We have separate units for the two floors, but I imagine the same principle applies. Also, can you elaborate on closing the dampers in "every room that feels normal until they all do"? I'm reading that as "restrict air flow to the other rooms except the hot one". Our thermostat runs the fan with the AC running I believe but I'll double-check.

   Upstairs room hotter than other upstairs rooms - We live in northeast GA and are fighting a losing battle against the heat. Last year we had our upstairs attic insulation redone with a spray foam solution. This has made a night and day difference with the temperature of the air coming from the upstairs AC (about 63°F coming out when the AC runs). Of the three upstairs rooms, two of them stay 5 or so degrees cooler than the third. This particular room faces east so it gets a lot of morning sun. It has a ceiling register directly above the ceiling fan (spinning counter cw), not sure if that's a contributor to that room staying warm. The air itself coming out of the register feels cool, but we just can't seem to get it cool. We have thick blackout curtains that we leave shut and a standing tower fan to help move air around. We also purchased a new ecobee thermostat with sensors to help regulate when the system runs, to mostly no avail. I've debated calling an HVAC company to make some recommendations. Based on the last time they came out prior to us redoing the insulation, the system itself is in good working order. But maybe there's a kink or something in the ductwork? I'm mostly concerned because the warm room is our kid's room and we don't want them hot for obvious reasons. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!

   Thanks for that response. My heater is about 10 and the AC is about 7 years old. Both work perfect now and are high efficiency units, so do you think I could get a $1k for the package?

   This advice is climate-specific… if you live somewhere hot and humid, regularly sucking a ton of humidity in through the walls can destroy the shit out of your house. The AC cools down the wall surfaces and the humid air getting sucked in forms condensation/mold in the wall cavities. It’s less of a risk in dry climates or cool climates, or non-air-conditioned houses. There’s also the risk of backdrafting natural gas appliances. This depends a lot on how well airsealed the house is. A giant exhaust fan without a makeup air supply is much more likely to cause issues than a smaller exhaust fan. Natural-draft water heaters inside the house envelope are the main concern. Fireplaces are also a potential issue if you have one. Either can put carbon monoxide into the house while the exhaust fan is running. Many combustion appliances can be an issue with a really powerful exhaust fan in an airsealed house though.
