   I just had my 30 year old unit replaced for $2400. They installed a pressure relief valve, shutoffs on both hot and cold as well as replumbed my humidifier line to the hot.

   We have a dual shower head setup, on on each side. Absolutely 0 regrets. No more awkward swapping and cold winter showers. It was worth every penny

   Oh nice, I didnt even think about just having it circulate when we wanted it to! How long prior do you need to tell it to circulate before the water gets warm? Is your cold water tap still cold or is it luke warm for just a second or two?

   Just to chime in on the physics reason - cold air holds less water than warm. Since water boils at 100C/212F, you can think of it like the colder it is, the less likely the water is to be able to stay as a gas. That’s why we use “relative” humidity instead of just humidity. It’s relative to the maximum potential humidity of the air at the current temperature. Absolute humidity is the partial pressure. So a HPWH dehumidifies the room because the coils get cold (as it moves heat into the water tank) and water condenses on those coils. Whereas, like you said, a dehumidifier has nowhere else to put the heat it’s moving (no hot water tank) so it just gets warm.
