   Pseudo-steam shower concerns - Hello. DIY'ing (most of) my bathroom remodel. I'm not installing a steam unit. But I am having the shower be completely enclosed with the glass going all the way to the ceiling. The walls and floor will be cultured marble (tyvarian). The ceiling is just green mold & mildew resistant drywall and the ventilation fan is a standard 50 cfm located in the shower ceiling. 1. How much/if any waterproofing should I apply to the ceiling? The cultured marble on the walls(not yet installed) just has greenboard behind it per the contractor's instruction. There is no steam unit in the shower, just the option to not turn off the fan to keep the steam produced by the shower head trapped in the shower. 2. When ventilation is desired, should I rely on gaps in the shower door for air ingress? Or have the glass manufacturer cut a porthole that can be open/closed to allow air ingress? Thanks for any and all advice you can provide!

   Hey xanvalentine, your gut feeling about the level of detail difference is spot on and telling you something. What isn't specifically designed or selected or detailed out will have to be at some point of the project. It's much easier to estimate the cost if those details are done upfront. With that said, that's a lot of work on both you and the contractor. This is why design/build firms are typically more detailed because they spend more time upfront with the client working on these details. They also typically charge for this. The path you mentioned you were headed down sounds like a decent one and sounds similar to how our company ran in the sense that we took care of ordering everything. This allowed for the correct amounts but more so timing. I'm not sure what project type you're working on but I would recommend you detail as much as you can on your own. Type of flooring (what type and what store is it coming from), countertops, backsplash or tile design. Get as much as you can working with your contractor since it sounds like you like them, then get the project going. Of course there are some items you might not be able to pick yet, as well as some things that might come up during the process that no one could foresee. But if the homework was done upfront these should be smaller and manageable by all parties. Hope it goes well as I'm sure it will!

   for the next roof wether you repair or replace it look at companies that are certified by the shingle manufacturer at a higher tier like rhino roofers for example is owens corning platinum preferred which means the warranty covers both materials and workmanship through the manufacturer, not just the contractor. that kind of coverage is what most people think theyre getting but arent.

   That's the classic gotcha isn't it, the big bold lifetime claim is just for the materials sitting in a box under perfect conditions For your next roof, push for a contractor that offers an actual workmanship warranty of at least 10 years and make sure it's transferable once if you sell, the manufacturer's piece of paper rarely saves anyone from bad flashing work

   None of this is hard, it just takes more time if you've never done it before. For the price of the contractor you can fuck up 5-10 times and still walk away saving money
