Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Hey xanvalentine, your gut feeling about the level of detail difference is spot on and telling you something. What isn't specifically designed or selected or detailed out will have to be at some point of the project. It's much easier to estimate the cost if those details are done upfront. With that said, that's a lot of work on both you and the contractor. This is why design/build firms are typically more detailed because they spend more time upfront with the client working on these details. They also typically charge for this. The path you mentioned you were headed down sounds like a decent one and sounds similar to how our company ran in the sense that we took care of ordering everything. This allowed for the correct amounts but more so timing. I'm not sure what project type you're working on but I would recommend you detail as much as you can on your own. Type of flooring (what type and what store is it coming from), countertops, backsplash or tile design. Get as much as you can working with your contractor since it sounds like you like them, then get the project going. Of course there are some items you might not be able to pick yet, as well as some things that might come up during the process that no one could foresee. But if the homework was done upfront these should be smaller and manageable by all parties. Hope it goes well as I'm sure it will!

A cost breakdown of my 2026 DIY bathroom remodel - I wanted to put a post out going over a price breakdown for a DIY bathroom renovation we did in 2025-2026 last winter as a guide and data point for others who are researching for themselves. Also maybe to spark some discussion on what we may have overpaid for (spoiler alert), and how to look for good prices when picking options for renovations. I see a lot of posts online going back many years of people talking about how they completely renovated a bathroom for $3k, $4k, $5k, etc. and while I am not saying that's not doable, after my experience I feel like those numbers are only possible if you're getting very cheap materials and/or fixtures. Here's the numbers (including taxes) broken down for our \~65 sq. ft. primary bathroom, full gut DIY remodel down to the studs: Tile: $1700 We were quite picky with our tile choices and didn't really like many of the options at Menards, HD, Floor and Decor, etc. We went to Tile Shop and really liked their selections, however I am well aware they are much pricier and next time I will probably stick to something like Floor and Decor. This number includes shower tile, floor tile, and an accent wall tile. Tub: $1250 We really wanted a deep soak tub compared to our 8 inch deep old cast iron tub. Kohler has a few options for deep alcove tubs so we went with the Archer. This number includes the drain kit assembly. Toilet: $550 I spent too much time reading about toilets and figured I'd buy the best so we went with a TOTO Drake. This one includes shipping as I could not get the 10" rough in I needed locally. Vanity: \~$2250 This is the single biggest purchase here and we definitely could have saved a ton of money. With the small bathroom we wanted the vanity to have good storage, and I didn't like many of the cheap options at the big box stores. We opted to get a 30" vanity built locally and a quartz remnant countertop made to the exact measurements for our space, which was good too because the corner this went in wasn't square so an off-the-shelf pick would have fit poorly and look bad. The vanity has two deep drawers with tons of storage so we don't need junk piled on the countertop. I do think for a non-primary bathroom, if the vanity is not going in a corner a nicer vanity from Lowes or something would be perfectly adequate at 1/3 the price. Fixtures: \~$1550 I read that dedicated supply stores like Ferguson have much higher quality parts than what you can buy with Home Depot, Lowes, etc. so we purchased mostly Moen parts through them. This includes things like the faucets, lights, medicine cabinet, towel bars, curtain rod, exhaust fan, etc. I definitely think we could have saved money here but with thousands of options to pick from at some point I just ordered. The Schluter shower shelves we got were quite spendy but I opted for these over fucking up a niche. We definitely didn't get what I would consider high end fixtures but everything we purchased was a step above what you'd find at Lowes/HD, and these added up fast. Building & Tiling Supplies: $3000 - $3250 This was the biggest surprise to me and made my eyes pop when I tallied it up. I'm not able to break this down much further but this includes my purchases at hardware stores like Menards, Ace, Home Depot, Lowes, and Floor and Decor throughout the remodel. The items purchased included primarily building materials (drywall, plywood, go board, plumbing materials, screws), tiling supplies (thinset, underlayment, grout, silicone, spacers), and others (various tools, masks & garbage bags, buckets, etc. etc. etc.) I purchased a few tools like a tile cutter, angle grinder, tiling and drywall stuff, but primarily borrowed or had existing tools. This stuff just kept adding up every week and I'm not really sure how others are able to keep this down. These purchases were mostly $100-$200 at a time but every week there were more things I had to run out to get. Paint: $200 I already had some paint supplies but this included Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa and some new rollers/brushes. Total: \~$10,750 I hope this gives some useful information and I'm curious how it compares to other peoples' experiences. I am aware there are several areas we could have spent less on, but I'm curious how much tariffs and inflation have affected prices compared to previous years. I also have no idea what this would have looked like to get it hired out. I figured it'd be $10k+ in labor so I opted to struggle over 5 months learning to do it all myself. If there's interest, I can also do a follow up post showing pictures of the final bathroom along with some lessons learned along the way. Edit: here's some pictures I have of the finished bathroom. Hard to get good angles since it's a small room. These also were taken before I finished siliconing the top edge of the tile along the ceiling

We had a Karran stainless undermount put in our new countertops in 2021. So far so good. Probably the most worrying place is where the faucet comes through. The epoxy bond on the sink itself seems perfectly solid.

Call around countertop/tile places until you find one that sells remnants. They will cut you whatever custom size you want out of the leftovers from kitchen slabs. The place I used for my shower curb was $45/sqft or something, it's not super expensive

Laminate costs have skyrocketted, and stone costs kinda have not, so I mean, I can buy a sheet of formica and some k3 and stuff, and spend a day making countertops, and it comes out to 1000 bucks, or I can have a countertop fab'd up out of stone or or quartz and it's.... 1000 bucks. So I mean, it's totally stupid to be using formica at this point. The "cheap" option ain't cheap, it just... looks cheap.
