   Painting the kitchen as a newbie and looking for any tips - So my husband and I are first time home owners and beginning to take on small home improvement projects. To begin, we are going to repaint the kitchen cabinets and kitchen walls (previous owner did a sloppy paint job and it’s bugged us ever since we moved in). I have bought a bunch of supplies, and a can of paint to begin but I will admit I am nervous to mess up and no amount of YouTube videos have quelled that anxiety. How we are going about this: My husband will take off all the cabinet doors and bring them down to the basement where I will use a sanding block to get off the old paint. The cabinets themselves will be staying upstairs where I will use a sanding block on them while they’re in place. I am a bit nervous about this for a couple reasons. \-I am nervous about the dust getting everywhere even if we cover in painters tarp. I am worried that clean up will not be so simple. \-I am also nervous about the airborne aspect of this, since we have an 8 month old baby. The days that I sand I plan on waking up very early (like 1 am) to hopefully give a few hours before she’s up for the day. Thankfully our kitchen has a few windows, but I am still nervous the air won’t be as clean as we would like. After everything is sanded, I will plan on painting the cabinet doors downstairs in the basement and the cabinets upstairs. I bought the Beyond Paint Refinishing kit in color sage for the cabinets. Reviews said that the brushes included suck, so I purchased different brushes. I plan on initially putting each layer of paint on with a brush, then using a roller to give it a smoother finish (saw this in a YouTube video). I’m hoping that will work to give it the clean look we are going for. I am also looking to paint our plastic cabinet fixtures and handles from black to more of a brass color. I saw some paint at Home Depot that allegedly works to create a faux metal look. I’m curious if anyone here has used a product like that and how it’s turned out for you. After the cabinets are all squared away, I plan on tackling the walls in the kitchen. They are painted now, but it feels very bumpy and just like a lot of crap was painted over. I believe they are wooden beneath everything. Is sanding the wall necessary? We live in an older home so I’m unsure if it’s just the material or if it’s really just bad painting. I don’t want to splurge on a sanding machine, so I will have to use a sanding block and that seems a bit daunting for all the walls, but I’m willing to do it if necessary. Thankfully we are keeping the color similar, just going from the bright white it currently is to a slightly off white to make the room feel warmer. I was also considering purchasing a design stencil to do “backsplash” behind the stove and sink area. I would just paint over the stencil with the same color we are doing the cabinets to tie everything together. Tiles aren’t really in the budget and truthfully I have no idea how well they’d even stay on our wonky walls. As a newbie I’m just looking for any tips or pointers, especially if something we are planning on doing sounds off.

   UPDATE FROM OP: I reached out to the GC and let him know, with pictures, just how messy this room is. I sent him pictures of the chunks of drywall left on ledges and floors, the crusty dusty window sills and baseboards, etc. I asked who was responsible for cleaning because I don't want the painting crew to end up gouging the floors with scaffolds or not have clean edges because of all of the dust on the surfaces. I also asked point blank about what the plan is for the plaster on the floors. Well, the painters are coming 8-8:30. The GC himself is coming out at 7 to clean first to make sure the room is ready for the painters. He's going to take a look at the floor in person, but he said he would make sure the plaster is removed, but he's being a little squishy with his wording. Like, he's saying "well, there was still adhesive and residue on the floor, so I'll make sure the plaster is gone, but you'll have to deal with the adhesive." I don't think there's a way to JUST get the plaster. I have a feeling he'll have to do a coarse grit sanding, which will take the plaster, yes, but will also take some of the adhesive residue. Thank you all for giving me the perspective and confidence to stand up for myself and my house to make sure it is restored the best way it can be.

   Depends what you're talking about. Piles of drywall dust, absolutely GC's responsibility. Failure to attempt to contain the dust to the work area is a problem. Every respectable job site these days uses 6mm poly taped to doorways with a zipper or velcro opening to help contain the dust. Jobsite perfectly dusted, not until the end of job when cleaners come.

   I'm not expecting the GC or crews to dust the whole house, which is dustier after their work. I'm more asking about the room itself. I'll be reaching out to the GC today.

   We are currently having work done in our house, and the electrician didn’t bother telling us that we should at least cover our couch and other fabric-upholstered furniture. We were clueless and partially spoiled because other subcontractors were very tidy. Anyway, we went to work and got home to a very very dusty house! Every surface was filthy. He “swept” the dining area but that is all he did. And by swept I mean you can see tracks created by a broom. The rest of the house was covered with dust. I spent 3 hours sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces at least 3x. I told the GC about it and all he said was he’ll talk to him. I have yet to deal with our furniture.
