   Can’t believe I’m contemplating repainting… - My apartment is in the process of being renovated and is obviously incomplete, and I am not staying there so I know I can’t responsibly make a decision now but I’m stressing…. My apartment is south-facing, 1 bedroom, good light. I chose BM White Dove for ceiling, wall, flush trim (different finishes). My initial take is that it pulls kind of warm in my apartment. Kitchen has an open passthrough and I had cabinets and a shelf built on the living room side. These, inside the kitchen, and in this space, are white, and the lowers in the kitchen are gray with a little bit of blue. Here’s the issue - I’m not liking the contrast between the cabinets and paint. And I’m worried how it’s gonna look with my countertop which is mostly white quartz with a little grey veining. I’m also having this quartz installed on my windowsills. What should I do? How can I make this look better? I don’t know yet why but the cabinets aren’t all the way to the ceiling so there is contrast between the white cabinets and the painted wall above them and on the sides and in some places at the bottom too.

   Mold in kitchen cabinets, not sure how to handle it. - I am in an odd situation of housing where I'm not the owner but I don't have a landlord. See the end of the post for the drama I guess. Our bottom kitchen cabinets are developing mold, probably in part due to a handful of floods from the nightmare plumbing in this place backing up and leaking out the hvac drain pipe. The other part due to my roommate letting soda leak and then not cleaning up the mess. They are MDF. Does not seem likely that they were painted or sealed correctly. Is there anything I can do about this that isn't just ripping out and replacing? I'm actually very allergic to mold and getting sick of living like this. For those wanting the reason: (I bought a home with my ex but he somehow managed to get my name removed from the mortgage, so I have no major interest in putting more money into it. I've done most of the upgrades and repairs out of pocket but I'm absolutely broke now. Initially I was building and replacing the cabinets, but between my disabilities/illnesses (fuck cancer), and skyrocketing prices, I just can't do it anymore.)

   You are not alone! Every time someone says “you’re getting work done on your house? Are you finally getting a new kitchen?” I want to scream at that no, my kitchen remains 25 years old, our entire budget is going to unsexy, expensive repairs. We have a bathroom that has been gutted to studs for six years but probably won’t get redone until we are ready to sell the house, because it’s not urgent. I hate it. What helps me a little is doing small DIY projects that don’t cost much or require any outside help. For example, my kitchen window sill is narrow and irregular, so today I am making a simple wood shelf that fits over the sill and provides a flat, useful platform for my herb garden. I am using wood scraps and leftover paint, so it’s free, and I will use it every day. Last week I patched and painted some walls and fixed a broken outlet cover. It is all low stakes stuff, so ymmv — if your heart is set on new countertops it probably won’t help. But I feel that by trying to tackle some of the things that annoy me on a daily basis, I am making the house feel more “mine” and less stressful. Good luck OP!!

   It can be really frustrating. It took us 20 years to get to making things look the way we wanted and do the renovations we had planned for. Before that it was the furnace, A/C, roof; washer and dryer, well, insulation, etc. But the good news was once we got the kitchen, baths, and flooring the house was super solid top to bottom. In the meantime I planned the hell out of the projects.

   How do you handle setbacks and disappointments? - I’m curious how others cope because I’m sooo sad. We’ve been talking about, planning and saving for a while to upgrade or update various things around the house. The plan was to take out as small of a HEL as possible next year. Admittedly, most of these things are cosmetic or just because we want to, like a bathroom remodel, new/better flooring in some spaces, updated kitchen design. All of those savings and plans are about to be wiped out by necessary repairs and upgrades due to the heavy rains all summer in our area. Our drainage systems couldn’t keep up and it’s become essential we address this and do it right. What’s the point of a dream kitchen if the foundation is buckling, right? I don’t know. I’m very very grateful we are in a financial position to handle what’s needed, but also just really bummed. I’m kinda feeling like Ellie and Carl in UP. Maybe I just needed to scream into the void with my first world problem
