Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Laminate costs have skyrocketted, and stone costs kinda have not, so I mean, I can buy a sheet of formica and some k3 and stuff, and spend a day making countertops, and it comes out to 1000 bucks, or I can have a countertop fab'd up out of stone or or quartz and it's.... 1000 bucks. So I mean, it's totally stupid to be using formica at this point. The "cheap" option ain't cheap, it just... looks cheap.

My last house had laminate that was probably 50 years old. That stuff was THICK and in great shape (and a neutral color, so that was good). I'm honestly fine with laminate. I have a glass "heat mat" right next to my stove so I can move pots off and I never have problems. The new stuff looks a lot better, but I think it's a thinner, which is maybe okay?

My M-I-L got laminate countertops and an undermount sink recently and it looks/works great. You have to get the kind especially for undermount laminate, which are Karran branded (they have SS and composite sinks). She found a countertop store that had done those before and they installed it. Basically, they route out the countertop material under the sheet of laminate leaving just the laminate and the sink snugs up in there and only the side of the laminate itself is exposed. She has a black sink and the edge of the laminate is black, so it looks seamless. That's something to keep in mind though -- the color of the sink and the "inside" /top color of the laminate to make sure you don't have a silver sink and a brown laminate edge and a blue countertop (as a crazy example).

Hi! Architect here. Laminate (ie Formica) is layers of paper glued together with a thin sheet of plastic on top. It is surprisingly durable for being mostly paper. When resin countertops (e.g. wilsonart) got to be a comparable price point the script flipped and everyone gets that. The resin stuff is significantly more durable but it’s probably not great for the environment.

We bought our house in 2003, redid the kitchen in 2010 and replaced the old laminate with new laminate. It looks just fine to me, and it was way cheaper.
