I used a Havahart trap successfully. Caught many squirrels and actually eliminated them for entire seasons from our yard.

I use a Gamo Arrow Classic .22 cal. pellet rifle with a 10 round magazine. It does a great job on squirrels, mice and rats out to 50-75 feet.

Our old dog would sit motionless until birds/squirrels/groundhog would get close then pounce! Terrier would have better

We had a voracious chipmunk infestation in our back yard and nothing worked. We adopted a puppy- not for rodent control- but a positive side effect was that the chipmunks peaced out. I've had good luck with a pellet gun to keep squirrels off a bird feeder, but be careful if you're in a residential area.
