   That step pour right against the house with no gap or flashing is gonna be a problem, moisture will just sit there and eat the wood from behind even if you patch the rotted bit

   Patio Error? - We recently got a patio installed in our backyard. They had to take the bottom two layers of siding off the bottom because they also removed the previous deck. After the poured it and everything we checked it out and noticed some wood rotting along the side of the house and figured we should replace it. Problem is, it looks like the poured the steps right up next to the house and said rotting wood. Now the whole piece of wood isn’t rotted, just one small section. We can’t replace that entire piece of wood because of the steps. It doesn’t look like there is a moisture barrier of any sorts there, so my biggest concerns are: A. Not being able to replace the piece of already rotted wood B. The concrete causing additional moisture problems being right up against wood. I haven’t reached out to the contractor because I wanted to get some second hand opinions so I didn’t reach out and ask stupid questions. I only have 1 year of home ownership under my belt and I’m unfamiliar with all of this. Patio Pictures

   Window replacement options - We have a mid-century house and the windows upstairs are in good condition. The downstairs windows are not the same quality. The wood frames on the outside and the inside of the house are in good condition. And we really like the finish of the wood inside. I’m thinking about having new inserts made and using the existing framing. Is there another option I should consider?

   The sill can often be repaired or replaced without replacing the whole window. A wood window is made from separate pieces, although some contractors may not offer that type of repair. The bigger issue is finding where the water came from. Since there was staining below the window, have the exterior flashing, caulking, roof connection, and framing checked. A new window will rot too if the leak is not fixed. Remove the tape and have the wood probed to see how deep the rot goes. Small areas can be cut out and patched with new wood or epoxy. If the rot extends into the jambs or wall framing, removing the window may be necessary. Get a quote from a finish carpenter or window-restoration company, not just a window-replacement contractor.    wooden window sill rot - Hi experts I have a few widows in my house where I notice the window sill has rotten wood. For atleast one window I have seen the ceiling directly below it have some water stains at some point in past ( not active) . we bought the house last year. I talked to several contractors and they are all recommending replacing the window. The reason they give is that the wooden window is all one piece including the sil and so it cannot be replaced separately. does any one have experience fixing / replacing rotten sill or is replacement of window the only option. I have several windows and replacement is very expensive.
