Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. Independent Living vs. Assisted Living advice - Hi everyone, My grandmother is 81 years old and living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. She has been living alone in her house for the last 10 years, but we have noticed some cognitive decline over the last 3 or so years. It has officially come time to think about moving her into a care community, but we are having a hard time deciding between assisted living and independent living. We originally had her on the list for independent living, but we are now beginning to worry that she may be past that point. She loves her independence and autonomy, which is why we were initially thinking about independent living. The pros are that she would be comfortable with her own apartment and wouldn’t have a significant loss of privacy. The cons are that she might decline enough to need assisted living pretty quickly, at which point we would have to move her again. She is also not very social, and we are worried that she won’t leave her apartment. **She is currently fine with:** Hygiene Cooking Cleaning Remembering appointments Familiar routines **She currently has issues with:** Paying bills Math Playing games Finding words Meeting new people / being in new places Technology Any advice or personal stories are more than welcome. Thank you all in advance!

Well... she needed care in 2016. You projected 10 years more growth than what she would have had. Secondly, she didn't pay all $40,000 in one lump sum in 2006. She paid the $40,000 over roughly 10 years. Please repost your calculation using these numbers.

Mom and I bought the house when her mother/my grandmother had Alzheimer’s and I was single with teenagers. I was able to give Mom some relief with Grandma after work and weekends and Grandma passed at home at 90 yo one year after we moved in. Mom was diagnosed about 10 years before she passed. My sister moved into grandma‘s portion of the house and over the years we’ve had a lot of other family that moved in and out of the (big)house . I honestly believe having a house full of people helped to keep mom more engaged and slowed her decline. Because of the family support she was able to pass peacefully at home. The last few years were rough but I would do it again for her. It’s not something everybody can do.

They have shown evidence that lifestyle meaning healthy eating, exercise, etc. delay the symptoms of AD(NIH.gov). You are correct that there is no cure, nor medication that will slow the process down; however I would have taken another 10 years of clarity for sure. But there’s no education. That’s why I mentioned testing, merely a blood test to check for that APOE 4 bio marker. If you show up positive, they can at least educate you on how lifestyle will affect you. APOE does not guarantee you will get AD. It increases your chances I think 60%. The 2020 Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care reported that **fully addressing 12 lifestyle risk factors can prevent or delay up to 40% of dementia cases** \[**1**\]. These risk factors include less education, hearing impairment, smoking, depression, physical inactivity, traumatic brain injury, high blood pressure, social isolation, air pollution, diabetes, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption. What if you have a genetic risk factor? Apolipoprotein E, commonly known as APOE, is a gene associated with varying risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, depending on which variant you have. There are three different variants—APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4—and you have two copies, one each from your mother and father. The APOE2 variant is the rarest form of APOE and is associated with a reduced risk for Alzheimer's. The APOE3 variant is the most common and has an average risk for Alzheimer's. The APOE4 variant, present in up to 15% of people, increases the risk for Alzheimer's disease. It is important to note that having one or even two copies of the APOE4 variant does not mean the individual will definitely develop Alzheimer’s disease. Similarly, not having the APOE4 variant does not mean the individual will never get Alzheimer’s.

Exactly. This diagnosis is hard enough to fully absorb and accept, however I had a pre-existing Brain trauma so my cognitive dysfunction goes back 10 years. I guess that just gave me more time in a stage that I can still think logically, sometimes. lol. The one thing I told my LOs when I first received my diagnosis: I am not putting anyone through that. I remember when my Grandmother was diagnosed when I was in my early 30’s. I remember her not knowing who I was, yelling, throwing things, etc. that traumatized me. My Grandmother was a very savvy, successful business woman who always kept her emotions in check. I know it would have shook her to her core to know she was treating me that way. Or rather the disease. I was my Grandmothers only granddaughter and we were very very close I refuse to be in some vegestative state and have LOs look down on me with pity. Or walking around defecating all over myself leaving my LOs to clean me up or the other many other abusive behaviors this AD comes with. Try doing that though, because it works; at least for me. Most don,t realize: it’s not actually a behavior issue, it’s a cellular loss issue. That part of your brain that controls impulsive combative angry frustrated behavior or vocabulary is dying off. It’s amazing that there are so many caring LOs and caretakers on here that want to be informed because that’s what we need, education on this disease and what it puts families through. Government also needs to realize there are many with this disease that do not have families or at least functional families that will help and come up with services to help these people live a reasonably comfortable life. I’m not saying spoil them, I’m simply saying make sure they have a way to the Doctor, healthy groceries, access to their medications, HEALTH ADVOCATES.
