Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

My mum has only just been diagnosed, so I'm no expert, but the anger is a pretty typical symptom of the condition. Once the treatment begins they'll be able to give your dad something to reduce agitation and anxiety, so hopefully that will help keep the anger at bay. I was actually able to speak to a psychiatrist (organised through the geriatrician) who did a phone consultation with mum and the following day called to speak to me, as I'd spoken confidentially to the geriatrician about some of the issues mum was experiencing. That was really helpful, because I could be pretty frank with him about some of mum's issues, and he could be pretty frank with me too without worrying about upsetting her. When he asked my mum if she every gets angry she said no, never. But I said yes, often. And when I described some of her outbursts he recognised them as pretty typical and mentioned specific drugs he could prescribe to help calm the agitation. So if it's possible, make sure you mom is able to accompany your dad to appointments, and she can let the doctors know that there are some issues there. If I'm talking in front of my mum, I don't say things like "she loses her temper a lot," I say "she gets overwhelmed easily," and the doctors pick up on my hints. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. 59 is so young.

Big adventure - I took my mom to her twice-yearly visit with the neurologist. She always writes down a list of her meds and says she is going to ask if she can stop taking them. She worries about where it is, walks back and forth between the calendar and wherever she left the appointment card and asks me multiple times how to get there. Even when I say that I’m driving, she still needs reassurance that I know where it is. In the car it’s where are we going and says she doesn’t know why she has a doctor appointment. In the building, she says she doesn’t know where the office is. Today we got there and she told me to wait in the waiting room. The last two times I went in with her, so I have no idea if the Dr. asked about me or what Mom told her. When they were done, the Dr. said she had done good and that she was renewing the Rx. I asked my mom on the way out what they had talked about and she said, “You know. She said things. I said things. I don’t even know why we came here.” Same, Mom. Same. It is a lot of prep for 15 minutes and some pills.

I'm so sorry you're in such a difficult position. Is there someone else you could talk to about your situation, e.g. or a doctor, psychologist, social worker or even church leader who could talk to the family on your behalf?

My mom had AD and it started with little things like what you’ve described. Then she started having trouble with the computer. Then she couldn’t remember how to get to the doctor’s office. It just kept getting worse as those early years passed by. But we didn’t know what was going on. Now, we know that lifestyle (diet, exercise, sleep, etc.), control of BP & cholesterol, and the new meds can make a real difference in slowing the accumulation of the amyloid plaques! Please have your LO go see a neurologist. The neuro will have your LO do a memory & cognitive test (draw a clock, remember these 5 words, copy this shape…), they’ll order bloodwork to check thyroid function and vitamin B12 level, and then order brain imaging such as an MRI to check for structural issues. Encourage the neurologist to order a complete neuropsych exam to identify strengths, weaknesses and impairments. It’s really helpful to get these baseline tests. Then in 2 years your LO can repeat the tests and you can make note of any changes. But don’t wait! The earlier you catch the problem and start fighting it, the easier it seems to be to slow or stop the progression.

There is VSED and there are agencies who can interview the patient to determine if they qualify for the MAID drugs. They are very expensive. A friend’s mom did this. She was in chronic pain and had other issues as well. Doctors put her through the interviewing process and approved the MAID pill even though she was not six months terminal.
