Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

My husband has it for 4 years he’s 64 now. He can still be engaging with people but also repeats himself a lot. But he’s also a narcissist everything is about him. You begin to feel like you don’t matter anymore. You have to do everything, they become difficult with there meals. I cook or you pickup dinner and they don’t appreciate it. You’re exhausted after dinner because you didn’t sleep well. You happen to take a nap on the couch and he wakes you because he thinks you’re not breathing. Because l’m human l’m upset because he woke me. He’s can’t handle me showing any frustration at him. He goes upstairs to bed and pouts like a child. So there l am on the couch alone watching tv. You have conversations with him but he doesn’t remember anything. He doesn’t remember that you don’t feel well that. You become so sad because he there but he’s really not there. When something happens in the house he wants to be in the decisions making because he says this is his house. But he can’t because he so confused about what we need to fix. I feel lonely and frustrated most days.

Slowly but surely. In my case, Stage 1-4 was about 7 years. Then usually it will go rapidly after stage 5 to 7. There is no warning for each stage progression and varies in the progression speed, it can be overnight or months or years. This devastating disease is so unpredictable and full of mysteries. It hits the hardest for the care givers. Not the patients. It is like watching The Titanic sinking. Slowly as the water flooding the hull and destroy what inside, then suddenly break the ship apart into pieces, then sunk into abyss. While we ( the care givers) are watching helplessly in frustration, desperation and tears. I am a neuroscientist. Unfortunately, it is still extremely hard to watch my mom in this horrible devastating AD. 😢

You seem very mature for a 17yo. The frustration and carers burnout is very real and I too trawl this sub for similar advice. Both on how to ensure the LO is well cared for and also to try and help the frustrated carers. It’s very difficult

The best thing for you to do is treat her the way you feel you should. If it helps her in any way, someone else should notice it, and then you'll have an opening to say something like "I've found through both practice and research that sometimes agreeing with her will calm her frustrations, and that she responds well to tenderness. Even though she's not choosing to behave this way, the person she is is still inside of her and oftentimes they'll also be frustrated because they themselves know they can't help it." My father in law was diagnosed 3 years ago (likely had developing symptoms several years earlier) and we're fortunate that not much about his personality has changed. Granted he has always been somewhat of a self-centered know-it-all, but he's never been confrontational. I see him getting frustrated that he can't control all the things he always did. He worked and provided and my MIL never had to. They've been married 41 years and a year ago I had it out with her and told her to her face "this man never raised his voice or treated you like anything other than a queen. He made you millionaires. The least you can do for the next few years you have left with him is to be tender and patient. You being frustrated with him hurts his feelings." She's very passive-aggressive and know that she complained about how I spoke with her to my brother in law. She's just generally pissy that now she has to step up and take care of some things now that he can't pamper her and whatnot. Don't get me wrong, I get frustrated with him, too. Having Alzheimer's doesn't negate that he was always a very difficult person to spend a lot of continuous time around. But I've learned over the last 13 years how to navigate speaking with him and it means a lot to him to be able to provide input into conversations or offer (unsolicited) advice. He's declined so fast and he's a shell of who he used to be, though, and it's heartbreaking for me for several reasons. He's the compassionate parent, and my wife absolutely has a far worse relationship with her mother, who is trending towards leaning on us for every. single. thing. Even crap she should be doing herself. I think when he passes it'll actually be harder for us when she becomes the equivalent of our third dependent. She pulled him out of memory care because he's getting delusional and would call us every day thinking he was being s-x-trafficked. Problem is, she's not giving him much of the care he needs and frequently brings him to our house to "babysit" him because she can't deal with it. We have two small kids and she can absolutely afford to pay for in-home assistance. I was in the kitchen and heard my 3 yr old son telling him how to hold "himself" and how to use the toilet from down the hall when he was here recently. It's hard on everyone, and you seem to be doing a great job of being aware. Don't get too down on yourself. If you're this emotionally aware at 17 I see you definitely maturing in the right direction. And for the love of GOD, don't think you owe it to your family to make any sort of sacrifice for their behalf. Your grandmother wouldn't want you to if you'd asked her before her condition, and your parents are adults who've had their time to develop as much as they've chosen to.

Thank you. I've come to understand why dementia/ALZ is called 'the long goodbye'. And why we, as caregivers, have to give ourselves grace for what we didn't know; for our irritability, frustration and even anger. Likely, there will be no closure; no final conversation. The closest for us was in March when my wife had two lucid episodes where we talked about our marriage, we apologized and expressed our love for each other. When I visit, I always tell her that I love her and she responds in kind. I'll get through this. I have to. She told me to marry when she's gone. Not thinking about that. I've given little thought to life after she dies. Here and now, one day at a time.
