   Falls are what seem to be doing the most damage with my FIL… some of them caused by UTI… but also the fact that he has a Lasix prescription and has been refusing it for weeks… he ends up with cellulitis in one of his legs and has to go to the hospital… I’m guessing this will be a wash/rinse/repeat, but we just moved him into memory care this week, so the Lasix problem will sort itself out as their nurses are now administering all his meds. He, too, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2025. It’s been almost exactly a year for him now. Looking back, we certainly had signs—I started noticing him have balance problems in late 2024; I remember asking to carry his attaché case for him one time. He wouldn’t reply, but also wouldn’t let me carry it. I think that was a sign of trying to hold onto his autonomy for as long as possible. It might also have been suspicion, but he has never been much of a talker, so I never got an explanation from him for it. We have never seen any outward signs of him being suspicious of us. We’re in the phase where he is struggling more to get words out that other people can understand. On the verge of gibberish, which I know will be so frustrating for him during the times when he is still aware. He hasn’t forgotten names very much yet, but he has started wandering at night. I think if we’re “staging” him, his mind is somewhere in stage 5 but his body is in late stage 6 (incontinence). My MIL is convinced he will die very soon, so trying to get her to shut up when she’s in front of him is its own challenge 😬 — when he was diagnosed last September, she kept telling people she didn’t think he’d make it to his next birthday, which was January 2026. Since then I’ve been saying to her, “that’s usually not how dementia works.” He *does* have Heart Failure, so it may not be dementia that carries him off, but it’s not our job to play that guessing game right in front of him

   My grandma started showed symptoms like repeating questions starting in 2014 and slowly declining till 2018, around 2018 she started experiencing paranoia and it was now unsafe to have her cook or go outside alone because she started getting lost, in 2020 she was in middle stages having strong delusions/ hallucinating and by 2023 she was in early late stages, today she is 81 but I would consider her to be in the late late stages, she’s been in the hospital about 4 times from falls or strokes in the last 2 years. She also officially has no more people who she can recognize. I think her progression is taking longer than most since each stage is seeming like 4-6 years. The sad thing is you really do grieve while they are alive, my grandma is still here but it feels hard because she isn’t. Wishing all love for you❤️

   My dad was on namenda and aricept but discontinued the aricept bc of side effects. This was before I was involved and my mom was caring for him, so I don’t know what the side effects were. But I do now that he’s been off it for about 6 months and I’ve got an appointment in about an hour with the hospital he was involuntarily committed bc he wouldn’t stop taking off in the car, believes he is in jail or on a military base and needs to escape, and is not going to be able to come home bc he’s completely lost touch with reality. 6 months ago he was still competent enough to administer his own medication. So looking back I wonder how bad those side effects really were compared to this.

   Is it delirium? My dad all of a sudden wouldnt get up and we can hardly wake him. Barely talks if anything its gibberish. We admitted him to hospital for a month and now hes being cared for at home. Its been 3months since and his condition hasnt changed.

   The irony of life, while I was writing my previous comment to you, an accident happened, and I’m on my way to the hospital with her now. Sending you a big hug.
