   Mom never drove away but she was quiet and quick when I went to the bathroom. She walked out of the house several times and once set the microwave on fire all while I was in the bathroom. And no, I’m not in there scrolling. I’m in there just taking care of business and getting out as quick as I can. All this to say that even the best caretakers have to use the bathroom and what your grandmother did was very very unfortunate but it’s not something you should feel guilty about. Not much you could have done to prevent it from happening. Patients even manage to escape from secure memory care units so be kind to yourself.

   I would suggest making sure that you get all the legal stuff taken care of like Medical POA, the financial stuff too. It is so hard. My best friend's wife has early onset Alzheimer and she will be 56 in just a few months. She was diagnosed about year and half ago. She has other health issues so it is getting harder. She might end up in a facility memory care before her birthday. I would talk stuff over with your sons too. If it is getting harder now it might be a good idea to start working on your house and getting on a waiting list. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this awful disease. We are all here to help to answers questions.

   Wow, from every single person on this thread. We hear you and we feel your pain. First, please download the book The 36 Hour Day. It will become a daily go to and help with so many issues. Next, what is your wife's diagnosis? Dementia or Alzheimers? Then, which sub group. There are five major sub groups and over 100 less common groups. It is important to know which one she has and which part of her brain is affected. For example, Lewy Body Dementia is a completely different part of the brain than Frontotemporal Dementia, and both of them are not Alzheimers. They are treated similarly but not the same. My own personal opinion dealing with my husband, 75, with Alzheimers APOE 3/ APOE 4, is we sold our house of 20 years, moved to a condo that handles all outside care, and has a pool. Downsizing basically by myself was so traumatic, and I am glad that is behind us. If I had it to do over, i would have sent him to stay a few days with his brother and moved with him gone. He could not help, follow directions, and just kept asking the same questions over and over. He likes the condo, has a small patio, and loves walking down to swim in the pool. Being close to family is a must. I was afraid he would want to go back to the house, and he has not even mentioned the other house even once. Go figure. Get the book, and use her diagnosis to understand your journey.

   My mom lost her Macbook in the earlier stages, and then found her old Macbook from 2009. I have no idea how she found it, and obviously it didnt work anymore. I had to come over and help with the whole situation, her newer laptop ended up being in a purse, hanging from a hanger wrapped in a leather jacket. My dad had someone at the house power washing and for whatever reason mom decided to hide her laptop.

   Yeah I'm sorry. People can really suck. We have a family friend that will actually babysit our loved one, even overnight, if we bring our loved one to her house. But I can't get her to come over here for the life of me. It's not like it's easy to get someone with dementia out of the house, but if it means a little respite I'll do it. Our loved one has lived with us for five years and constantly thinks "they" are coming to pick her up. Aside from her daughter, no one has come to pick her up ever. Yet she had a very broad range of friends and relations. She thinks I'm just being a bitch and not letting her go with all of the people she is hallucinating who are standing out in the road begging her to join them.
