Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Well I’m not sure she lied because my family were told to attend and say their farewells and this is indeed what occurred in my loved one’s final hours. I was not there as I think they believed I was somehow keeping her going (emotionally). You are right on the suffocation she was struggling to breathe and it was very traumatic to watch so the doctor told them it could be arranged (the extra morphine)and they even asked her. She was already on the morphine.. They said she just went to sleep.

I sat at my mother's bedside as she took her last breath from early alzheimers. I authorized morphine to make her death painless. Anything less is cruelty.

  3. Comment

Are there not signs of pain or discomfort or air hunger? The hospice books we got from the hospice said not all deaths are painful. Some people want to stay alert. The idea that death without morphine = torture is not accurate.

We do not "require pain to justify it legally". We do not kill people. Many people last *longer* on morphine and anxiolytics because the morphine dries up the mucus they can't clear from their lungs and throat, and because they are relaxed so their BP is lower so they don't crash out. People lose consciousness when they are dying of multiple organ failure, which is ultimately what kills people slowly (and therefore that is when hospice is even an option). They will do that with or without morphine, but without the morphine they tend to suffocate before they really lose consciousness. It's pretty horrible to watch. We use morphine because it metabolizes so fast. It's not street heroin. It wears off quickly and therefore you can pivot quickly if you need to, if they react poorly or need a different dosage or need a different medication altogether. We do often have to educate caregivers that it is incredibly difficult to overdose someone on morphine, in the formula they are given, and that yes it IS ACTUALLY OKAY to give them what "seems like" (if you are not a medical professional or prescription abuser) "too much". It is not too much, it is enough. It is the physical addiction mechanisms of morphine that makes it a poor choice for people who are not going to die soon. Not a problem in hospice, and people do often go past the Medicaid 6-month timeframe (you just recertify, it's not a big deal), and by that point they may be fairly functional still even on paced dosage of morphine. You have constipation issues to manage if they go on that long, but that's a given for almost anyone in slow organ failure anyway. That doctor lied. That is also not what palliative care does either. You can look it up instead of spreading misinformation. I get it, I used to think it must be true, but I cleared that up in less than half an hour of research.

My mom suffered from this horrible disease for 10 years. My bonus dad, brothers, sil, my husband and me were forced to live a decade with a woman who was wasting away. And the most annoying thing people did was saying that at least she is still alive. No she isn't. The woman who raised and loved us left her body years ago. This is a shell. We talked about this so many times because my mom would really choose death when she was this. Eventually she got a constant epileptic seizure and we put her to sleep with morphine. She died after a week of no eating and drinking. I wanted to her have the ending she deserves. Not this. I still get nightmares about her death
