Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I tell my dad "you're not stupid. if you were stupid you wouldn't notice that your memory is giving you trouble. You're upset about it because you're smart."

Hard but meaningful visit - I visited Mom and Dad today because they wre really upset and I wanted to comfort them. Mom has still been driving (she passed a driving test after her diagnosis, much to my and my sisters' dismay), and last week when she drove to bowling when she got out of her car a person she had inadvertently cut off yelled at her in front of a bunch of people. She was humiliated and I think it reminded her that this is a progressive illness and things aren't going to stay this way indefinitely. She came home and told my dad she's done driving and also done bowling forever. This was really hard for her because she's a really independent person. But I'm glad we didn't have to take her keys away and she was able to make that choice herself. The disease is progressing, I think she may be in stage 5 or 6 at this point. I spent the weekend with them (they live my sister and brother-in-law) playing games, going on a drive (I drove), and visiting the Farmer's Market. I could see how upset they both were, and it was really hard. When I was leaving, my mom took my hands and told me that she loved it when I visit because I'm the only person that doesn't try to tell her to be different and that she's enough just as she is. She gave me a diamond ring her father gave her that had been in his family. What a really hard day today. I feel so much grief I can barely function. But I'm grateful that I can be there for my mom. I love her so much and I'm so sad she and my dad are ending their lives with this painful illness. I'm grateful for them both and that I get to support them and say goodbye. Thanks for reading.

My husband has it for 4 years he’s 64 now. He can still be engaging with people but also repeats himself a lot. But he’s also a narcissist everything is about him. You begin to feel like you don’t matter anymore. You have to do everything, they become difficult with there meals. I cook or you pickup dinner and they don’t appreciate it. You’re exhausted after dinner because you didn’t sleep well. You happen to take a nap on the couch and he wakes you because he thinks you’re not breathing. Because l’m human l’m upset because he woke me. He’s can’t handle me showing any frustration at him. He goes upstairs to bed and pouts like a child. So there l am on the couch alone watching tv. You have conversations with him but he doesn’t remember anything. He doesn’t remember that you don’t feel well that. You become so sad because he there but he’s really not there. When something happens in the house he wants to be in the decisions making because he says this is his house. But he can’t because he so confused about what we need to fix. I feel lonely and frustrated most days.

I'm used to the incessant questions and can normally deal with that. It is the shadowing that drives me crazy, especially since before we were both very independent people who had different interests. Last night he came up to me with his cell phone upset that he was unable to change the tv channel. I calmly explained that he needed to use the remote and got back a bit of an attitude that he quickly apologized for. He said he sometimes gets things mixed up. I said it was ok, no biggie.

Four years is a long time to put your own life on hold to care for your dad. You deserve a ton of credit for that, and nothing less. Taking this opportunity doesn’t erase any of that, and it doesn’t mean you’re walking away from him, you are not. Plus, your mom and sibling are there, so you’re not leaving him without care. The part I’d really challenge is this: “If he was conscious, he’d be disappointed that I left him.” Are you sure that’s your dad talking, or is that the guilt talking? Your mom knew him too, certainly even better than you,and she’s telling you he’d be proud. If one of my kids put his career on hold for four years (or even one or two) to take care of me, I’m pretty sure my reaction wouldn’t be, “You need to give me another year.” Through our home care business, I see families slowly build their entire lives around caregiving. It usually doesn’t happen intentionally. One responsibility gets added, then another, and eventually the caregiver can’t imagine stepping away without feeling like they’re abandoning the person. But there has to be room for your life too. Before you leave, help Mom and your sibling build a plan that doesn’t depend on you being physically there. Write down Dad’s routines, medications, appointments, what works when he’s upset, what doesn’t, who handles what, and what they’ll do if his needs increase. If they need additional help, start arranging it before you leave rather than waiting for a crisis. Then stay involved from wherever you are. Video calls when they work for him, regular calls with Mom, handle a few administrative things remotely if that’s useful. You can still be his son/daughter without being his full-time caregiver. Also, it’s a year. You’re not making an irreversible decision about the rest of his life. Go. Feel guilty sometimes if that’s what comes with it, but go anyway. You can love your dad tremendously and still take an opportunity to build your own life. Those two things aren’t in conflict.
