Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

>As mentioned already, there's a narrative in EH and then 3E , MoM and LCG because of coherence of the Ancient one events. In AH 2E there's no narrative - its pure exploration and discovery. Uhm... * You're supposed to create a narrative in your mind from what happens on the board. 😃That's what emergent narrative means! * What you're talking about is designers trying to railroad the narrative by taking emergent narrative from the players, railroading it and pushing it down player's throats. * Basically players being too lazy to turn on their imagination 👉 hey designers are more than willing to take over as this means stuff isn't as replayable anymore, so you need to buy more content. 💸 >Eldritch Horror is much easier to control, its not a roller coaster. You know where you need to go to advance the story, and same with Arkham Horror 3E. I If narrative is emergent story advances anywhere. You don't need some top down designer meddling to push you there. >And all of these games are only replayable due to deck size, at just the base game if you play it \~7-8 times you've start seeing all the same things and it gets boring. I'm fine with AH 2E base game. Had back to back games with completely different vibe - one was A E Poe's story or unescapable doom befalling on cursed characters, the other was pulp shooting down zombies with a tommy gun Tarantino-like extravaganza. If there's room for imagination of players, this will give such a game replayability. >but I don't recall there being any deduction in solving the mystery. Me neither. And I give weekly offering to Elder Gods thanking them no deduction was put in AH 2E. 🙏😇 Like - deduction detaches one from character immersion, why would you want that. >There's literally no difference mechanically around being set in a city vs on the globe. /..../Doom countdown in AH2 and EH both creates the same sort of urgency arbeit in a different sort of track. Hm. I've played EH a decade ago (reason - AH 2E being more down my alley) My comments from the time note *"Another thing closer to TotAN are chaotic events - as stats of characters never change and items are hard to get by (if your influence isn't high) most encounters are very random in outcomes - they'll hit you, or won't. And you'll get certain statuses you'll try to get rid off (kinda like TotAN). In comparison to AH there's less tension and the feeling of sliding towards inevitable doom, instead it's more of a rollercoaster with some ups and downs (but more coherent, nowhere as crazy as TotAN)."* *"The chaotic nature of events also makes EH feel close to TotAn - namely character stats remain static, and items are difficult for acquire without high influence, so encounters are more random in their results - you get hit or not. Also kinda like TotAN, you'll receive statuses and try to remove them. Compared to the steady tension and constant push to the inevitable doom of AH 2E, Eldritch feels more like a rollercoaster of ups and downs— but with more coherence than TotAN, "* It could be map isn't the culprit as such, but if memory serves EH made me feel less a part of the group as AH 2E. > Arkham Horror only feels like it has more tension because the monsters are harder to defeat that you'd need to sneak around and hope they don't come your way. You mean like how every horror movie ever gets tension? Seems legit to me. 😄 >But we definitely experience them in a different way. Yup. I will of course claim my way is closer to original design intent, which is seeing AH 2E as RPG surrogate. Something close to Betrayal at House on the Hill and of course TotAN. If memory serves Michael Barnes had a good argument that AH 2E is in essence a variant to chose your own adventure type games, but events on cards. >An unfortunate part of this hobby is that for me the more I play, the less I am enamoured by a theme as you start noticing the mechanical underpinnings of a game. I think I'm doing well in not sabotaging my own thematic enjoyment - the point of mechanisms in games like AH 2E isn't to exploit them for a win like in eurogamez; the point of mechansism in game like AH 2E is there to give you material for thematic immersion. (That's why details on weapons - 1 or 2 handed, that's why money, that's why lots of fluff). But also to get out of the way - the beauty of dice resolution is that it's quick and requires little to no strategy, because strategic thinking and optimisation of mechanism would break the immersion. In ameritrash like AH 2E you have to pretend mechanisms are not there, even though it's a big pile of them kinda pushed under the rub creating a tiny mountain. *I mean I've played AH 2E with complete nongamers and it worked fine - because it really doesn't ask for much from them, but to enjoy the ride. (I handled all the rules, just explained to them how upkeep and sliders work).* My issue is that It's near impossible for me to get a narrative driven ameritrash in last 10 years which wouldn't have euro gizmos stuffed in there (no I don't want to deduce, solve puzzles or juggle mechanisms), wouldn't be app driven or wouldn't have railroaded narrative (scenarios or legacy). What you talk about is wanting more railroaded, more top down controlled content with less emergence, probably with some euro elements. Sure, why not, but it's not hard to get that in todays hobby. It's the absence of this which is nigh impossible to find. Cam I haz my adventure without them euro bits please.

>AH 2E felt way more focused, because there's a the shared city location (instead of being lost on the globe) and because the tension is more pressing. There's more urgency. There's literally no difference mechanically around being set in a city vs on the globe. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it still takes the same amount of moves to get from one location to the next. It is just a theme difference, instead of going from Downtown to Updown, now its Beijing to Tokyo so I don't see how it is more urgent. Doom countdown in AH2 and EH both creates the same sort of urgency arbeit in a different sort of track. >Huh? I don't want to be guided thought the game like a 6 year old. That's the point of co-op - to figure shit out. 😄 There's nothing to figure out to advance the mystery. The same cards are in each game and there's so many different decks that its all just random because your actions are limited before the doom gets to zero. You might get something good or you might get something bad. One deck might have more items and the other more spells - you start seeing a pattern the more you play but then it becomes less thematic and more mechanical. >Also known as "emergent" part of "emergent narrative". This exactly means the game is replayable on the narrative level and one doesn't need 3-4 expansions for that (one can still get them for other reasons) As mentioned already, there's a narrative in EH and then 3E , MoM and LCG because of coherence of the Ancient one events. In AH 2E there's no narrative - its pure exploration and discovery. Not saying thats good or bad, its just a different beast. And all of these games are only replayable due to deck size, at just the base game if you play it \~7-8 times you've start seeing all the same things and it gets boring. Same criticism for the entire range and why I prefer getting and have been getting all the expansions. >The point of AH 2E is to play it as a vehicle for in character immersion, for immersion into the world and atmosphere. You want to win, play Brass or something. I mentioned it plays like Vantage and ToAN - or Sleeping Gods - which are all character immersion based games. >AH 2E has a dramaturgy of tension and push towards conclusion which TotAN doesn't have ( I mean both are great, just very different beasts). Yes, it is a narrative ride - but one with built in tension that points towards conclusion. I agree with the conclusion and tension part - that's about all that I agree with you on your post. The ending is one thing that the entire Arkham Files range of game does much better than any of those other games I've mentioned. Arkham Horror only feels like it has more tension because the monsters are harder to defeat that you'd need to sneak around and hope they don't come your way. >Yeah, a lot of work was done to trim 30 minutes from a 4 hour game and lose 75% of tension in the process. I mean I like EH, it's a cool rollercoaster ... etc Eldritch Horror is much easier to control, its not a roller coaster. You know where you need to go to advance the story, and same with Arkham Horror 3E. It's been a long time since I played my AH 2e but I don't recall there being any deduction in solving the mystery. It's more about dodging monsters and closing gates and if Ancient One wakes up, you pretty much have close to no chance, which is on point thematically. In later games you have more of a chance to actually beat the ancient one but the odds are stacked against you, sure I guess you can call that cutting out tension, but I find that to be a minor change. Anyways, obviously I love the entire series of games proven by how much of it I own. But we definitely experience them in a different way. An unfortunate part of this hobby is that for me the more I play, the less I am enamoured by a theme as you start noticing the mechanical underpinnings of a game.

I played and own the base game and expansions of all the following and heres my thoughts: Arkham Horror 2e Eldritch Horror Mansions of Madness 2e Arkham Horror 3e Arkham Horror Card Game 1e (most expansions until they revised it) The LCG and Arkham Horror 3e differs quite a lot to Arkham Horror 2e even though they have the same name. 3e is more of a pandemic style puzzle and LCG is more of a deck construction game. As far as what it feels like playing them, LCG and 3e are much more focused on telling a coherent story within their scenarios and you really get to feel the narrative progress. Second edition doesn’t really do that. Arkham Horror 2e is closest to Eldritch Horror but more luckier and it feels like you have less control. It’s much more of a sandbox experience of finding horrible things happening to you. In Eldritch Horror you need to focus on certain things to meet an objective, but in Arkham 2e its more unclear how you can achieve your objectives and so its more swingy and sometimes doesn’t quite feel like you are progressing. You are just as likely to win/lose within 2 hours as you are to win/lose in around 5-6 hours. The one thing thats most different is fiddling around with your stats to do certain action which feels like its giving you more control but in reality its still down to luck whether you win or not. I would approach it more like Vantage or Arabian Nights where you are just having fun discovering what horrors awaits. Second edition also is extremely fiddly with many user made guides and flowcharts to remind you of what you need to do based on expansion rules. There’s too much convoluted “if this happens then that otherwise this” type of rules so you end up forgetting to do things to upkeep the game without a flowchart. Eldritch really streamlined all of those fiddly rules so I am curious how they approach that in Remastered edition.

3E is significantly different than 2E, and they seem to have dropped it by now. In all honesty, I feel like there were structural issues with 3E’s design and while it had some good ideas, it was bloated in a different, worse way than 2E - and that was with only like 2 expansions.

Two suggestions for you: \- Splotter Spellen’s *Indonesia 3e* \- Fabio Lopiano’s *Sankoré* Both beautiful productions, both highly interactive and very replayable. Indo in particular never gets stale because with each play, relatively small decisions can burgeon into game-changing effects. Sankoré has Ian O’Toole’s signature all over it—utterly gorgeous. And the constant competition for students, books, and primacy in the library mean that you have to stay aware of every move your opponents are making. Now that I think of it, I have a third suggestion: *- Age of Steam Deluxe* Another Ian O’Toole design, this one isn’t sumptuous in the way of Sankoré or Speakeasy, but it is so very *very* replayable… and unlike Indo, readily available.
