   A gaming group I left always played in a basement, and between the DM’s body odor and the morbidly obese player who did not bathe, getting through a session without puking was like an actual hero’s quest for me every time. Pretty much any hobby or lifestyle that appeals to socially awkward people is going to be filled with people who can’t or won’t practice basic hygiene. For some of them, it’s apathy, for others, it’s autism, and some autistic people apparently have sensory issues with showers.

   Game store BO finally broke the back of my MTG addiction. I had played off and on since 95. A few years ago I was off the wagon and had bought cards, made decks and was going in for a friday night tournament. I opened the door and stepped inside, There was maybe 2 or 3 guys at the tables, but the body odor while standing at the door was so bad I had a moment. I asked myself "do I really want to be around this?" I turned around and walked out. I still indulge in certain youtube creators, and have 31 years of collected cards, but I haven't played since. As far as conventions, I haven't been to one since the 90's, so I'm not sure about that.

   I assure you it it isn't just straight cis men. There's a prominent niche of queer folks who fetishize body odor and choose to not wear deodorant ever.

   Conventions...YES! I've had someone with body odor so bad I actually gagged when they sat down at the next table. We had to abandon the game we were playing. I mean almost everyone is perfectly fine but there are hygiene issue people the likes of which I haven't encountered in other large groups.

   Gotten worse over the years? Maybe after covid people forgot how to be social to some extent but in general most geeks were not very socially aware before that either. Stink levels are pretty constant. It is absolutely a board game nerd community problem. Sure large groups will have a certain body odor. But geek culture has an extra mustiness to it. I have been to business conventions, robot competitions, rodeos, ren fests, comic, anime, and game conventions. Rodeos smell worst on account of the animals, next is the comic/anime/game cons. Business professionals typically smell the best. The comic and board game stores can be a mixed bag. But there's always AT LEAST one stinky mf. Either they don't bathe enough, don't wash their clothes properly, have way too many cats, or don't know what deodorant is. It's always mildew, pee, BO or a combination occasionally they smell like straight up butthole. Sometimes they smoke too. But realistically these days it's some Skittles or weed vape on top of the concoction of other smells they've gone completely nose blind to.
