I think it's actually quite active! Beijing, China has Dice Con, and Japan hosts Game Market—which actually takes place twice a year. I live in Taiwan, so the one I attend most often is the TOBE Game Fair in Taipei. While they might not be on the same massive scale as Germany's SPIEL Essen or Gen Con in the US, it at least gives people on this side of the world a place to easily try out original board games and check out sales without spending a fortune flying halfway across the globe. I'm not exactly sure about other regions, but here in Taiwan, there are board game cafes everywhere!

There are some Twilight Imperium r/twilightimperium tournaments world wide. The biggest one is likely UK National Championship event with 84 players last year and 120 this year. Other big cities / well populated countries have tournaments too. Here in Norway we have no tournament! :( But I can travel to Denmark, Germany or UK to play a TIournament.

T&T is my favorite strategic wargame! You can win an Economic victory by increasing your production, a Tech victory by researching 4 levels of Atomic tech, or a pure points victory at the end of 1945. I agree it's unlikely the war never starts, however I will say my S.O. has played a peaceful Germany aiming for economic victory and forced me (Britain) to invade to stop that. So it leads to some fun scenarios
