Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Hard disagree! OPs breakdown is exactly how I think about teaching my kids to not overwhelm them. It's so much easier to teach someone a new game by saying "this is like forbidden island...except" Breaking down mechanics and finding games that only add 1-2 new ones is a great way to litmus test a new player. It may fail spectacularly, but it might be their first real intro and it will unlock the whole hobby (from experience on both of these). Never would I ever sit a new player down to a COIN game if they were asking me if it was like Monopoly or sorry. Find the on ramp and eventually they may get there. Or maybe they are only a monopoly only player. Don't think of this as a "way to get everyone to love the hobby" but rather a strategy for breaking down the heavier games to see how deep others want to dive down the rabbit hole!

I do have fun with them, and I can tell they like board games too. They buy board games they're interested in and we play those. I know they can handle heavier games, the problem is just their impatience and intolerance for rule learning. I want to curate my own collection to be something to guide *all* of us up the ladder. I am *far* from a heavy board gamer, but I do think we can improve and learn more

This is good to know! I thought they were shifting away from selling the heavier games

Buying games for the future? - I’m getting back into board gaming and starting to build up my collection, and there are so many cool games I want to get! Unfortunately with work, three little kids, and a lack of consistent gaming friends, I don’t actually have a ton of opportunities to play heavier or longer games (we play a lot of family games). There are a lot of games I want to play in the future as my kids get older and/or I find more serious gamer friends — does it make sense to buy some of them now in case they go out of print? I’ve only been following this sub for six months or so, so I don’t really know how hard it is to get games 2/3/4+ years after their initial run. I know something like Catan will always be available (and I’ve played enough Catan) but I’m thinking of heavier games like Spirit Island or Lost Ruins of Arnak, family games like Quacks or Chronicles of Avel (already a bit hard to find), 2 players like Raptor or Jaipur, or big campaign games like Tainted Grail or Dragon Eclipse. I realize none of these are super niche, but I just don’t feel like I have a good sense of the market. How much is scarcity an issue with board games? How do you balance buying games for the future vs counting on things to still be available when the time comes?

Apples and oranges. FotF is pandemic style and way more simple. Spirit Island is territory control with upgrades overtime. I'm not a LotR fan so I'm heavily biased towards Spirit Island. Add that with it being the heavier game with so much replayability and SI wins for me hands down.
