    I considered it until I realised it was going to be £287 + VAT in the UK for the Mithril edition so thats £344 to start, then $80 (!!!) shipping + VAT again... so another £72! insane

    There are some Twilight Imperium r/twilightimperium tournaments world wide. The biggest one is likely UK National Championship event with 84 players last year and 120 this year. Other big cities / well populated countries have tournaments too. Here in Norway we have no tournament! :( But I can travel to Denmark, Germany or UK to play a TIournament.

    I've been to several Root tournaments around the UK that tend to get upwards of 40 players, with some coming from abroad. I also heard of larger tournaments that take place in Europe

    If you go to a board game convention you'll find tons of tournaments like this - I run Arkham Horror events yearly at my local con, usually sells out and we did a mini con that got 80 people a couple of years ago. I'm planning on running a Root tournament next year too, there's a few regular ones of that across the UK but none close to me.
