American brands seem to realize not everyone wants a giant yank tank the size of a school bus and a V8 that drinks fuel like one. What happened to the Focus, Fusion, Cruze, Malibu and Dart? Heck, outside of the Korean made Trax and Trailblazer, Ford and Chrysler seem to snub anyone who can't afford a new car costing more than $25k.

$25k in 2016 is $35k today... BUT car prices increased faster than inflation, and interest rates are double/triple what they were ten years ago, and destination fees have doubled too. Two years ago when I worked out the monthly payment for an identically equipped 2020 Ram vs. 2024 Ram, the monthly payments were nearly 70% higher. So everything factored? $25k in 2016 might buy $45k today for a vehicle.

Brand new Elantra hybrids are going for $25k for the lower trims, and higher trims are around $28k. Not bad for a car that can get nearly 50mpg
