   Were you in elementary school, middle school, high school, university, or on a pacifier during the 08' crisis and Ford needed a bailout? They were doing the same thing - making cars their own factory workers could not afford. All that money spent lobbying congress to give themselves tax breaks instead of lobbying to not let the market break itself and destroy their customer base. The lower end of the market will crack hard, people will not be able to afford low mpg off road LARP / Cosplay toys, and Ford will find itself with no economy cars to sell, and the top end of the markket will also chill out for a yesr or two to see where the wind blows next - but its too late for Ford, their lunch eaten by other brands.

   I feel like our modern understanding of what trucks or work vehicles are meant to be has been warped, now every pickup also has to be your daily or fun to take off road. But in sense the Slate is a return to form - a truck that answers the question of "how do I get my broke blue collar and whatever equipment or materials I need to a job and back while spending as little money as possible?". And in 2026 the answer is no longer a big Ford with comfortable seats and loads of quality of life features but a plastic chinese box with an electric motor.

   Pretty sure Land Rover or Mercedes comes a lot closer to “the Porsche of off road…” Rich people looking for an off road toy/status symbol are buying land rovers, g wagens, built sprinter vans, or built jeeps. Or classics like the Land Cruiser or Lexus GX/LX if they just want to have fun and fly under the radar. Rich ranchers or Texas oil money might daily a high trim ford, maybe some random rich guy is really into desert running and buys a raptor for that very special use case, but obviously ford can only ever really hope to be the chevy of off roading. Or the ford of off roading.

   Eh, the raptor isn’t really a practical off-road truck either unless you’re into destroying it. Rubicon Jeeps and Powerwagon are much more useful if you actually want to use it as designed. Ha Nobody does though, and they’re fast!
