Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

    >But the way things are now, I still take our ICE on about half our road trips over 4 hours. I bought my EV with long road trips in mind, and I've taken it on long road trips, and for me it's been fantastic. It's better than the diesel SUV that I was driving before. Hmm. . . I wonder what accounts for the difference in our experiences? (I think we'll find the answer a little further down.) >What I mean is, 30-40% improvements in range and charging speed would take me to functionally no difference in the way I take road trips in an EV or ICE vehicle. I'm driving a six, nearly seven, year old EV that's EPA rated 400 miles but actually manages about 280 miles at highway cruising speed. It's limited to about 200 kW peak charging. I find that I cover the same distance in a day of driving that I did before with the Jeep. I don't have to leave earlier. I don't expect to arrive later. It's 500 to 600 miles in a day of travel (depending on conditions), then have my down time in the evening and be ready to do it again the next day without stress. >There are times when after 3-3.5 hours I’m ready for a longer stop, but there are also times when I just need to do exactly what this CEO said I don’t. Get gas and use the bathroom and get back on the road as fast as possible. Well, there it is. That explains a lot. I'm ready to take a break after a couple of hours of driving. Maybe on the first leg of the day when I'm fresh, then I'll stretch it a bit longer. But gas or electric doesn't matter, I've got to take breaks. So which one of us is normal and which is the automotive freak? If you look up expert advice they all say pretty much the same thing: 2 hours driving, 15 minute break. Max 10 hours / 500 miles of driving in one day. They're recommending pretty close to what I've been doing. It's not because I followed their advice. I just found what isn't stressful for me. If you really need to go 800+ miles in one day, maybe it's time to consider air travel. This IONNA guy, he's working every day to partner with the big travel stop chains. Those businesses have been growing in size and amenities every year, making money by enticing travelers to spend more time-and-money in their stores. It seems to be working. If normal folk weren't taking the bait, those business plans would have collapsed by now.

Diesel electric hybrids are the the ultimate tow vehicle. The power of a EV with the range of diesel and the efficiency of a hybrid. It's a shame GM, Ford, or RAM hasn't jumped on this yet.

  3. Comment

There have been some companies that tried that. One of the issues is that a lot of current EVs maximize battery capacity (and range) by essentially molding the battery shape to fit the body of the car and in some cases the battery body is essentially structural. So making them swappable would require a big decrease in range for most cars that wouldn’t be palatable to the majority of drivers. Plus the infrastructure for swapping batteries would’ve way more expensive and intricate than plugging in a cord.

They’re fantastic tow vehicles… as long as you don’t need to tow too far. Low end torque, regenerative braking, and being heavier than a similar ICE vehicle are all pluses for towing, range just suffers more than ICE because of the charging time and lower initial range (not efficiency)

Yea it is I just wish there were more powerful non-plugin parallel hybrids. Like the Grand Cherokee 4xe I had as a rental had 375 HP but only as long as there was enough charge to run EV only. It’s 270(ish) otherwise. Then it also just starts working like a normal ICE car for the most part. Same with a lot of the Germans. Range drops below EV only threshold and it’s back to working like a normal ICE car as opposed to say a Toyota plugin where it acts like a non-plugin hybrid. Edit: HP for the jeep.
