Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

The mk4 R32 with VR6 is awesome fun. Way more fun than the current mk8. Worse in many ways, slower and much less comfortable and less space and so on. I find it funny how r/cars loves to complain about downsizing, but seems ambivalent about this change? The EA888 is everything people here usually hate. It’s a boring, soulless, downsized, corporate turbo engine. Anyways, I’m sure the reason is emissions and packaging and efficiency and the fact that VW doesn’t really care about fun cars. The spirit of the GTI is dead at this point. Maybe some day they will resurrect it.

Highest power output for the VR6 was 300hp in the R36 Passat (naturally aspirated). Much older variations of this engine were easily tuned with turbocharging to over 600hp. And remember, the W12 I the Phaeton, A8, and the Bentley's was based on the VR6. The VR6 was awesome and sounded great. But it was heavy and not very fuel efficient.

  4. Comment

The vr6 is also heavier than the ea888 which adds understeer in this platform since the engine is in front of the front axle.

  5. Comment

Power too tbf, the highest output factory VR6 was just under 250hp, where as they can easily and reliably get 300+ out of a turbo 4. Adding in the significantly broader torque curve and you have a much faster car. I like the VR6, but absent turbocharging that engine, you weren't going to see much more power. The highest output factory NA engines usually don't go past 100hp/L, even then they're requiring more and more revs. The Golf R's current horsepower spec would require the VR6 be putting out the same hp/L as a K20. Possible, but would need revs and a fully reworked head. The biggest issue here being that the offset design made it really difficult to create something that genuinely had good headflow. So you're probably not getting there without forced induction, then you might as well just go to a 2.0T.
