Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

This Reddit shocks me for how little it knows about this subject. Makes me think 90% of people here either don’t travel abroad and work or don’t have jobs. Tell me, what is the company liable for? The only thing the company could be liable for is taxes if you become a tax resident, which takes 183 days… so we’re back here again. Do yourself a favor and research.

Not enforcing doesn't mean it is legal. Most people here probably do it. But in this case, it is not legal to work on a Schengen visa/entry without having a proper visa. Tourist visas almost never allow active remote work. It often allow attending a conference, to take a few calls, but not to conduct active work. Some companies may not want to have their employees to be in a irregular situation while working for them. Some won't care, others won't know they should care. Tax residency can be triggered before the 183 days in many places. That is more of a it is systematic after 183 days vs it can happen in some circumstances prior

That’s not how it works at all. To become a tax resident of Italy requires spending more than 183 days in Italy in a 365 period. I’ve worked remotely from Italy for months at a time (non EU passport) many times. If you think anyone is enforcing or has the capability to enforce nomads working on tourists visas you are lost.

IT has nothing to do with this, they don't decide where payroll reports you. "On the road, or in a satellite location" in every policy I've seen means a coworking desk or a client site in the same country, not another continent. What actually decides it is tax residency and permanent establishment, and past 183 days in most of LatAm your employer has a problem whether they care or not. Ask HR in writing.

No, you cannot simply "pick and choose" tax rules out of thin air—tax residency laws apply wherever you go. But here is the secret to how digital nomads actually handle taxes, housing, and expenses without going broke. This is one of the most common misconceptions about the location-independent lifestyle. The short answer is: **Nomads don't pay double rent, and they don't ignore tax laws—they use Legal Tax Residency Rules and Geoarbitrage to their advantage.** Here is a breakdown of how it actually works in practice: 1. Can you "pick and choose" where you pay taxes? You cannot arbitrarily declare where you pay taxes, but you **can** legally structure your physical presence and visa category to optimize your tax burden: * **The 183-Day Rule**: In most countries, spending more than 183 days in a calendar year triggers local tax residency, making you liable for local income taxes. Nomads who move every 2–3 months on tourist visas often remain tax residents of their home country while remaining non-tax residents in host countries, where they are generally only taxed on locally-sourced income. * **Digital Nomad Visas & Special Tax Regimes**: Many nations now offer specific Nomad Visas with major tax perks. For example, under Spain’s Startups Act, qualifying remote workers on a Digital Nomad Visa can elect into the **Beckham Law (Article 93 LIRPF)**, paying a flat **24% tax rate** on earned income for up to 6 years instead of progressive rates up to 47%. * **The U.S. Exception**: If you are a U.S. citizen, the IRS taxes your worldwide income regardless of where you live. However, tools like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) or Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) prevent double taxation. 2. Do nomads pay for an apartment back home AND hotels abroad? **Almost never.** Paying double rent would make the lifestyle financially unsustainable! * **Full-Time Nomads**: Most nomads terminate their leases at home, sell or store their furniture, and give up their local apartment entirely. Their accommodation abroad *is* their primary housing expense. * **Part-Time Nomads**: Those who keep a permanent home base usually sublet their apartment (e.g., via long-term renters or Airbnb) while traveling, using that income to offset their mortgage or rent back home. 3. Isn't traveling and staying in hotels super expensive? It would be if you traveled like a tourist staying in luxury hotels every night. But nomads practice **Geoarbitrage**: * **Earn High, Spend Low**: Nomads typically earn in strong currencies (USD, EUR, GBP) while living in regions with significantly lower living costs, such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, or Southern Europe. * **Monthly Rentals vs. Daily Hotels**: Nomads rarely stay in hotels daily. They rent furnished apartments or co-living spaces on a monthly basis (via platforms like Flatio or local sublets), which offers massive discounts compared to night-by-night rates. * **Net Savings**: Living in vibrant nomad hubs like Buenos Aires, Valencia, or Chiang Mai often costs 40% to 70% less per month than keeping an apartment in expensive cities like New York, London, or San Francisco. **Bottom line:** Digital nomading isn't about paying double for everything—it's about eliminating fixed overhead at home and spending your money in places where it goes much further.
