   i've been tapped by recruiters for contracts but have never done then and assume those were subcontracts too. networking is ideal with current/former companies and colleagues.

   No. My landlord is very nice and relaxed about it. He just asks me how many months and when I’m leaving and returning bc I leave Albania after my year for 90 days somewhere else and come back. Our only sort of contract is what we establish in WhatsApp. Some might not be comfortable with that, but my situation is trustworthy. I got very lucky. I don’t have to lock into to any set amount with him. If you stay at someone’s Airbnb you can tell them you are also interested in longer stays. They will work with you. I also did this in Montenegro and it worked just fine also. I went from two weeks to three months in that Airbnb. Same in Genoa when I was in Italy.

   your best bet is leveraging talent and network to get a 1099 contracting job so the onus of any tax obligations is all on you and no one has to bother thinking about them. you'll want to work in an industry/for a customer where you can honor the corporate/b2b contracts/state level compliance/contracts/regulations, maybe that could even be health care related if some kind of global drug company or something done with research on anonymized data. if i found out someone was just hiding and eschewing these things i would burn them out of my network. that there are some many people in this thread advising you do it with health care data is beyond idiotic.

   I think the frustration is that you chose to sign a contract without reading it. If the contract explicitly states that the first 72 hours are not covered, you wasted their time, not the other way around. Many people sign legally binding contracts without reading them & love to tell me “I never read that stuff!”. Well, this is what happens when you never read that stuff. Now you know. Also - I hope your wound is healing. Getting bitten is traumatic & I am sure all the insurance drama didn’t help. I’m wishing you safe travels from here on out.
