This is not true. Doing this is not a crime. You can have a VPN server on your home country and this is literally undetectable. Even if they find out the worst thing that can happen is you getting fired. I'm doing this with a German contract for the past 4 years and still have my job.

I've got a friend who works for a German company but lives in Portugal. He comes back every so often and it works for him.

German too here. It is possible. It’s not company related, it’s you related. You need some visa for different countries. Any country hast its own visa rules. And then, there is the „Doppelbesteuerungsabkommen“. Germany has this with many countries. So if you’re longer than 183 days per year (not per period) in another country the „Doppelbesteuerungsabkommen“ „switches on“. My way is this: End of the year I travel to Thailand. I have a DTV visa and will stay for 6 months. After that I’m heading over to Vietnam (you can stay there some month), after that I look for the next country. And if the year is over I turn back to Thailand and start the wheel new. :) But, I’m self employed. The reason for this was exactly the travel approach. But, there are companies which are really ok with this lifestyle. Mostly software dev companies. Good luck :)
