   That sounds stressful, data is otherwise one of the best fits for this kind of life. What decides it is where the data physically sits and who can reach it, so aim for companies that already have legal entities in several countries (GitLab publishes a whole handbook on working abroad) or roles where the data reaches you already de-identified. Honestly the legal risk mostly lands on your employer, what you personally lose is the job, so get the permission in writing before you book a flight.

   No policy isnt permission, it usually just means nobody has asked yet. At a big company the actual rule tends to be buried in the payroll or tax docs somewhere, not in anything with "remote work" in the title, which is why searching the handbook comes up empty.

   Your employer never stating a restriction isn't the same as permitting it. Ask HR directly, because they're the ones who'd have to sort out an Italian payroll presence, and silence in a handbook is not an answer.

   I would not ask for clarification and definitely use a VPN so they don't see where you are and decide to clarify with you. If they don't know you're international, they aren't doing anything wrong on their taxes and you aren't doing anything wrong either, because they never wrote it in the handbook.
