Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I also came to Thailand with that digital nomad idea of traveling around without a base. From the moment I landed it did become the base though, 13 years ago. Have been everywhere from North Korea to Indonesia during those years but i'm happy Thailand became my home. If they allow me, I will probably stay here forever. Enjoy the short trips away and enjoy the feeling once you get back! It's worth it.

Officially: 1. if you work for Germany company as an internal employee with remote option you cannot work abroad freely 2. if you work as a contractor worldwide you are waived from the rules above to a some extend in terms of location 3. for both cases you **have to be legally allowed to work** from the country you are working from (yes, Indonesia, Thailand, SA included). Tourist visa or entrance are not authorised for work. Working here and there just because you employer doesn't care about your location are not automatically mean these countries governments agree. IRL: Answering your overall question - people work without telling authorities where they work from, obviously. Some countries care less, some more, some companies may check logs to see where you're logging from. In majority of cases you have a legal registration in the country you are planning paying taxes in, sign the contract as a business entity and fill in declaration as if you've spent this whole time in Georgia or Cyprus wherever (despite actually been on a visa run in Thai or on Bali), and upon entering the customs you say 'tourism, sign seeing' as a visit purpose.

    > But I'm genuinely curious, what motivates digital nomads to go there over Thailand or Vietnam? I wanted to visit Indonesia. > So what's the actual draw? I wanted to go there.

You need to have a visa for longer than 90 days here in Vietnam, definitely no tourist visa, and hasn't been for at least a few years, though Ive never heard of this being possible, maybe more than 10 years ago? You must have a work or business visa for 12 months, and do the entire theory and practical exam in Vietnamese. Indonesia is an option, foreigners in Vietnam often get theirs there while on a tourist visa, and they can use it here because of the SEA agreement.

How do you actually live abroad long‑term with a remote job? (German here) - Hi everyone, I’m based in Germany right now and my biggest goal is to have a 100% remote job that lets me travel and live in different countries for longer periods of time (Thailand, Indonesia, South America, etc.). What I don’t really understand: I keep seeing posts from people who live abroad for months or even years while working for a company in their home country. But when I read about German rules, it looks like I can’t just live outside Germany for too long if my job and employer are based here (tax residency, social insurance, number of days abroad, etc.). So my questions: \- If you have a German contract and are employed in Germany, how are you practically living in places like Thailand or Indonesia for longer than a few months? \- Is the only realistic option to work as a freelancer / contractor, or for a foreign company? \- Are there specific roles or industries (that are not classic IT/developer jobs) where fully remote work from “anywhere” is actually possible for Germans? I don’t have an IT background, and to be honest I’m a bit lost about which direction makes sense now with AI changing everything. Friends who work in IT tell me it’s getting more and more competitive, some even lost their jobs or are worried they will. So I’m hesitant to invest years into a new field that might be unstable. For me, the main thing is freedom, not maximizing salary. I’d be happy earning “enough” if it lets me live in cheaper, beautiful countries and work from my laptop. I just don’t know which path is realistic: \- Should I try to retrain into a specific remote‑friendly field? \- Look at freelancing / online business instead of classic employment? \- Or are my worries about German rules exaggerated and there are legal ways to stay abroad longer than I think? I’d really appreciate concrete examples from other Germans or EU citizens who managed to do this, and any advice on realistic job paths that make sense in 2026 with AI and all these changes. Thanks in advance for any insights and personal experiences!
