Lyon is a rsther nice location in Europe if you also want to travel a bit. Fast to the alps to ski, rather quick to real Italy for some real difference. Also de mediterrane sea is not far. Just make sure you stick to close to the old parts, the rest very quickly becomes ban lieu concrete land.

Marseille is the second largest, Toulouse is becoming the third. Lyon is withering away.

If you use the train to get to Paris, then Lyon is the halfway point from Montpellier to Paris. Montpellier is an awesome city, and close enough to Marseille by train. Depending on the types of cities you like, Montpellier might be a great choice. Its vibe is more like the smaller US cities; Portland, Charlotte, Austin (before the current tech boom), etc.
