Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

UK self-employed abroad since 2022 - tax refund and NI qualifying years? - I've lived in the UK since around 2007, but left in January 2022 and have been living/travelling abroad since then. I physically do my self-employed work abroad. My UK days were roughly: * 2022/23: 0 * 2023/24: 30 * 2024/25: 0 * 2025/26: 9 I kept filing UK Self Assessment and paying UK tax because I wasn't sure whether I'd return. I'm now considering correcting my previous returns as I may have been non-resident. I've potentially overpaid a few thousand pounds in Income Tax/Class 4. My main concern is **National Insurance**. I currently have around 11 qualifying years, and I don't want correcting my tax returns to cause previous qualifying years to disappear. **Has anyone actually corrected their UK tax returns after becoming non-resident and received a tax refund? What happened to their NI qualifying years?** Also, has anyone dealt with the **new 2026 rules for voluntary NI contributions while living abroad**? I lived continuously in the UK for around 15 years before leaving, so I'm particularly interested in the new 10-year UK residence requirement. Thanks!

You'd be surprised. A lot of people go self-employed mid-year, buy a plan, have a decent year, and don't think about the cliff until their accountant tells them in March they owe $6,000 back. It's not ignorance, it's just that nobody hands you a manual when you leave your W-2 job.

Everyone knows about it. How could you be self-employed and paying for insurance and not know about it?

You're welcome. Not sure if it will work, but it is worth a shot. <also> If you used any AI in drafting and/or editing, that is going to be treated differently based upon if: 1. Did you caption "DISCLOSURE: I used AI to assist me with editing this, but the thoughts are my own." 2. Did you remain silent about any AI-disclosure? _Why does it matter?_ r/fire has problems with AI posts _flooding_ things, but more importantly, it has problems with those AI-supported posts more often than not giving poor or unnuanced, uncontextualized information. The r/fire community is about as sophisticated as they come when it comes to MAGI management relative to health care. So you'll get better results if you put a disclosure, since that will help your audience trust you. _Final thought?_ Search that sub before you post. You'll get a feeling for how it is discussed, how often, and if you want to make any tweaks to your own post rather than simply cross-posting what you already have shared here. (And good luck. This shit is a big deal for the self-employed, regardless if they are digital nomads or retirees.)

Self-employed and this affects me. Basically, I’m just dumping a ton into retirement and my HSA account to lower my AGI to keep the subsidy. It’s the best option I could figure out.
