   For base you can choose any city but my top 3 would be Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola. Internet is fast, food is great and people are friendly. There are dn groups on fb that you can hang out if you want that. Nature ia beautiful if you want to explore and most important its cheap. You can open company in Macedonia and pay your self minimum wage and take the rest of the money for 10% flat tax.

   The main challenge in Skopje was the air quality, particularly in winter. I haven't lived there (I don't consider myself having lived somewhere unless I've spent 6 months in that country) but it quickly revealed itself to be quite a big negative. A local friend warned me about it, and it was quite right. Semi-permanent "pollution-induced fog" became a little tough to handle. The internet was solid, everything was cheap, and I somehow got by speaking a mix of English and somewhat random mixture of other languages. I won't bother reporting on time zone differences as they never affect me no matter where I am, rendering my time zone difference experiences essentially useless for anyone else.

   Skopje is ok but socializing isn't as great as other places in the Balkans. Ohrid is nicer generally but much smaller. Bitola is even more affordable but you'll need to learn some Macedonian to get by. Internet reliability is ok if you're sorting it out yourself. Lots of people get by on slower packages. A1 Have regular deals for mobile data. Healthcare is of variable quality but inexpensive. There are coworking spaces but I don't use them. The first big problem with Skopje (and others to a similar extent) is air quality. Skopje gets really poor air quality in winter and air quality can drop quite badly in the summer. Speaking of summer, Skopje is like a frying pan, moreso than Podgorica (but better than Podgorica). The Muse In The Mirror is worth watching for slices of Skopje life. International banking can be a pain in the ass, not as bad as Bosnia but worse than say Montenegro. You need to sort out residency first, which requires an address, which requires a deposit from a bank account...

   I been doing this from Skopje for about 8 months now, working for a company in California. Internet is rock solid in the city, never had a drop during calls. The time difference is the tricky part, you end up starting work around 4pm and finishing late at night, so your social life takes a weird shape. Rent is cheap compared to most of Europe, I pay like 350 euro for a nice place near the center. Banking I just use Wise and my US account, never bothered with local bank.

   Anyone living and working remotely from Macedonia? - I’d really like to hear from people who are currently living there while working remotely, especially for U.S. companies or clients. How has the experience been with internet reliability, time-zone differences, banking, getting paid, renting, coworking, healthcare, and everyday life? Is Skopje a practical place to base yourself for a year or two while continuing to work remotely?
