   Absolutely. It's expensive but as necessary for their health as ours is. We took one of ours in this year and he apparently had had an abscess at some point under one of his canines so it had to be pulled. The other dog had his done last year and two of his teeth fell out without any real pulling. Both are fine, no more swamp-breath either. We probably won't have it done annually because of the cost and anesthesia, but it still needs to be done.

   Super worth it! My labrador (11 yo at the time) lost 12 teeth during her second dental her whole life when she only lost 2 during her first dental. She is prone to tartar and plaque build up because of genetics and she is not a chewer. She felt great after she got all those bothersome teeth out of her mouth and I didn’t even know they were bothering her until after she was all healed up! Anesthesia and monitoring equipment is much more advanced in veterinary medicine than it used to be as well.

   You can’t get below the gum line adequately without sedation which is actually one of the most important parts of a dental, nor can you typically get the x rays needed. I would genuinely question any veterinarian that actually supports anesthesia free dentals and would not return to them. They’re glorified tooth brushings for a price. You can do that at home. Not to mention it’s very stressful for the majority of pets for it to be considered a widely safe option. For pets that can’t safely go under anesthesia, they either switch gears to highly monitor them, use a different sedation protocol, or even just avoid a dental altogether because whatever ailment they have that is making anesthesia unsafe for them- bad teeth is usually low on the list of concerns at that point.

   Dental disease can and does kill dogs. It can be very uncomfortable or painful for your dog and sometimes lip or paw licking is the only way they can show you. Absolutely if the recommendation is strong. If your dog doesn’t need it, a reputable vet won’t strongly recommend it. There is also an age limit due to anesthesia, and that’s a heartbreaking way to lose a senior who would have had more life otherwise.

   Do it at 6y because at 12 there are worse complications with anesthesia which they will need for any extractions that result due to poor tooth health at that age.
