   The dog sounds conflicted, not aggressive, his usual roitine was being interrupted by a stranger, and dogs often don't care for changes to their established routine. He's kind of saying - "hey, what are you doing here, you don't belong, I want you to leave, but not sure how to make you do that, so I'm going to make a lot of noise, and hope you take the hint." I don't want to say he wouldn't bite, because an aroused or conflicted dog is more of a risk than a calm one. Ignoring an aroused dog completely is the best strategy. Kids are taught to "be a tree" in the presence of a barking, excited dog - stand still, fold your arms in front, look at the ground. Be as boring as possible. Some dogs will calm down and go away, some may hesitantly approach to sniff your feet or legs, tail wagging. This doesn't mean they're friendly, it means they are looking for more information. Movement by you at that point will likely set them off again. The dog's owner should have had that dog under control. She may be right that there's nothing to worry about, but that doesn't mean it's ok to let her dog make other people uncomfortable. And, all dogs are "dangerous" under the right circumstances and an uncertain, conflicted dog can be the right circumstance. Glad nothing worse then a scare happened, and hope your next meditation session isn't so rudely interrupted.

   Can barking in a play bow stance actually be aggression, or is it always exclusively playful? - I was meditating the other day near a stream. A woman came by with two dogs. I was keeping track of the dogs as they walked past behind me, and I noticed their attention on me/the spot I was sitting at. I could tell this was a new situation for them and that they were a bit unsure. This one dog wanted to come up to where I was, (his favourite spot, according to the woman a bit later), but seemed too uncomfortable by my presence, and then went to another part of the stream. After a minute the dog left the stream and came back, and suddenly charged at me. I immediately stood up because I was scared. The dog went apeshit crazy and was barking at the top of his lungs, but he also had his chest on the ground. Every time I moved he seemed to want to lurge at me all the while he kept barking. The woman said he isn't dangerous, and I was just in his favourite spot, which was a new situation to him, but I didn't know how to interpret the behaviour. I grew up with a dog but this dog was barking so wildly, like how some reactive dogs go absolutely crazy when walking past other dogs and their owners are just clutching the leash with all their might, and it just didn't feel like normal playful behaviour, he seemed so anxious. Idk man. I didn't know whether to look him in the eyes or look away, every time I looked away it seemed as if he was going to charge again but eye contact is also supposedly threathening to an aggressive dog. Can a dog mean actual aggression despite being in the play bow position? And how do you react when an unfamiliar dog charges at you only to stop 3 feet away from you to bark really wildly in that position? Edit: I have actually had something similar happen a couple of times in the last couple of months, having off-leash dogs charge at me when I was sitting on the ground or starting a run after walking, unexpected things for them, and I never really know what to do except stand up and freeze and wait for their owner to drag them away. If anyone has any advice for that situation that would also be welcome.

   Thank you so much for responding, this puts my mind at ease! I can see how my behavior would have freaked her out and it did seem to be a new space or at least a space she isn't in often. Do you think there's anything I should/ could do to make sure it doesn't happen again? Also, was the barking and following just a way to get me to back off?

   enjoy. it only lasts a while and then their keen senses will find some noise they can hear and its back to barking. My amStaff did this. (Austarlia) -> He now know when that buggy comes down the road.

   How do I help a former outside dog sleep all night? - I am getting an 8 year old pittie mix that has been living outside on a farm for that time. She gets one more night before becoming an apartment dog. She is innately not a barking dog during the day, but loves that night chase yk. Most nights are spent running around and barking, then sleeping all day. Is there anybody who has experience with replacing that enrichment for a dog? I'm mainly curious what it is I can do for her aside from just walks. Thank you for any help!
