Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

How active are you (not your husband, since you’ll be the primary caretaker)? Do you currently jog, go for long walks every day, hike, etc? How much free time do you personally have every day for training, walks, dog care? I’d consider fostering the dog if or volunteering at the shelter to learn more about dogs first. It sounds like you don’t have much experience with dogs as an adult. Take the time to learn about dog body language and behavior, as well as basic positive dog training methods. Dogs absolute change your life. You have to consider their needs and care. If you want to go out for dinner after work, you need to either have someone to let your dog out or to run home before dinner. You need to budget for dog care if you’re taking a vacation. You need to have a plan to pay for vet bills and dog food. You need to spend time training the dog and taking care of it.

I think the best way to overcome this is by educating yourself on dog body language, training methods, and by consistent hands on exposure to well mannered dogs. The more you know, the more comfortable and confident your body language will be, and the less the dogs will pick up on your “shiftiness”, for lack of a better way to explain it.

  3. Comment

I imagine that befriending one or more individual dogs would be helpful. If you have friends or neighbors with reasonably well-behaved dogs, ask them to work on this with you. Spending time with an individual dog will help you learn to read dogs' body language so that you can better recognize when a dog is being friendly versus aggressive. Dogs can be very compatible with cats, e.g., acting as guardians to protect cats from predatory wildlife, if raised for the role.

it's wild how much that early stuff sticks with you, like your brain just hardwires "dog = danger" and runs with it for 20 years the cat thing is interesting though, you clearly know how to read an animal's body language when you're not tense, maybe start by just watching dogs from a bench somewhere, no interaction, just observe how they communicate with their owners and each other til your nervous system calms down a bit

  5. Comment

I agree with people recommending a qualified therapist. However, I will say that your fear communicates more through body language than it does hormones or scent. Try focusing more on how you hold your body in situations where you feel comfortable and safe and how you hold yourself when you are anxious about a dog near you. Then try to adjust your posture and body tension accordingly. I think you'll find it helps in some situations Best of luck on finding your way to loving humanity's best friends!
