Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I have three small dogs. All except one holds bladder 6 hours, approximately, if needed. They're seniors. I had to learn how to move so as not to step on them. They generally live longer. Depends on the breed, but may need more dental care. They sleep with me. They are easy to haul around in my pet stroller but used to go on long hikes with me when younger.

i always made fun of my friend for having little dogs--i said they weren't dogs. i have always had medium-sized dogs, mostly aussies, around 45#. when i got a 25# ACD/rat terrier mix, i LOVED the smaller size!!! less food, easier to travel with, etc. then during covid a friend's dad died unexpectedly and i temporarily took in his TRULY freak of nature dog: a miniature dachshund. i actually felt sorry for her being a little lap dog, afraid to step off the porch to pee without me. allll these years later, she is with us still and SUCH a little bad ass! LOVES to run around in the field behind our house on her own, chasing rabbits, etc. much easier to travel with, super sweet. we still have her, AND have a 47# dog. we feed them the same food: diamond brand dog food. it just happens to be a smaller-sized kibble so it is good for all sizes. Obviously, the rescue may not know for sure what type of mix it is, but please keep in mind that little dogs are more likely to have gum disease, need yearly dental care as they age and often need teeth extracted. This just cost me about $600 this year for our dog. Last year it was over $400. Some dogs, like chihuahuas and mini dachshunds, are more prone to it. Check into any other health issues common in the breed, like spine issues in dachshunds. Other than this, I LOVE having a medium dog and a small dog and hope to always have one of each.

We did it for my dog several times but then she developed other issues and was no longer a candidate for anesthesia. The dental infections became so bad that she was on antibiotics x 10 days/ off X 10 days and repeat for years to stave off abscesses. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and she developed a fistula (a hole where one should not be) between her jaw and her sinuses. She didn’t seem to be in pain and was eating well so the vet and I felt she was stable. Ultimately that sinus fistula likely worked its way up into the eye socket. DO ALL THE PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE POSSIBLE. I sent my bestie over the rainbow bridge 3 1/2 weeks ago and I haven’t stopped crying. Brush their teeth. Use the porter on their food that helps prevent tartar buildup. Do ALL you possibly can to keep their teeth clean. You don’t want their lives to end because of something that’s mostly preventable. Do this all before it becomes unmanageable. Dental care for animals and their humans is vital to maintain good overall health.

I was a surgery nurse at a vet clinic for many years and cleaned loads of dog teeth. I highly recommend regular cleanings for little dogs to help negate needing loads of extractions all at once in the future from severe dental disease. Medium/large dogs are really hit or miss. We did a few dentals that were not even needed for large dogs because the owner was told by a vet that it should be done but the bigger dogs it’s easier to do dental care at home.

if you get something that’s VOHC accepted they you can be sure it works (although there are also products that work that aren’t vohc accepted, as the vohc doesn’t review all products.) the 3 vohc accepted toothpastes are: Petsmile Professional Pet Toothpaste,Tartar Shield PRO CARE Natural Pet Toothpaste, and HealthyMouth Toothpaste/Brush Kit combination for Dogs Large/Medium Breed (I’m not sure if that last one is sold anymore). another one that’s recommended by vets frequently is Virbac C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste. you should still talk to your vet about dental care. as toothbrushing can’t get under the gums, so your pet can still develop dental disease that requires cleanings to prevent/treat.
