   Depends on the age and breed, but most dogs need two walks a day to sniff to maintain their wellbeing. That is in top of breaks to go pee. So you need to factor in whether your schedule and body allow for that or if you need a neighbor or dog walker to assist. Dogs can live 15 years and vets are expensive. Where I live annual exams, labs and vaccines average $350-500. Plus fleas and tick and heart worm meds (another $50/mo). Some breeds need daily brushing, and some need to be shaved or trimmed once a month. I’m terrible at brushing regularly so I went with a low maintenance breed that I shave every 6 weeks. Ideally 8 hours is the max they should be alone. If you factor in work, commute etc can you make that work? Or do you need a dog walker to come in mid day? Some breeds do terribly left alone and or have high exercise needs. Malamutes, huskies, cattle dogs, German shepherds etc will typically destroy your house if left alone for long periods on a regular basis. Where as a pug is quite content to sleep and be a couch potato while you are gone.

   I have a husky and a German shepherd and a cat. My boyfriend and I consider them as our children. And they all spend time on the couch and our bed. We also cover our pillows because both our dogs want to sleep like a human with their heads laid on the pillows. Our scent is very concentrated on the bed and couch since we spend lots of time there and we see it as they like to be there because they feel closer to us when we are not home. We have dog beds everywhere but they choose to be on our bed. And that’s okay with us. We are dog people, so it just makes sense for us. We wipe down paws everytime they come in from being outside to minimize the dirt coming in as well. Your dog loves you unconditionally, they have a short life compared to us, and they spend their life mostly inside waiting for their human to do things with them. I think they should be on the allowed, but that’s just me. I also have a good ‘off’ command trained so they move if I need them too.

   My female German shepherd never marked territory but she also had EPI so I don’t know if that played role or just her personality. She would get aggressive with other female dogs though. My current dog is my second dog and a little Pomeranian who thinks he’s quite the big man. Glad to know he just wants to leave a message for the other dogs in our complex and nothing medical going on!

   Thank you! He is the second dog I’ve ever had, my first being my German shepherd who was female and EPI. She never really marked territory, but would become unusually aggressive around other female dogs. We also lived in the country and recently moved to an apartment (divorce) so if he was marking before, it wasn’t noticed as the yard was much larger and was on a leash less.

   Neutered dog still marks - My dog(m) is a little over 6 years old. We got him neutered as soon as it was safe/recommended. When we first got him we had a 12 year old cat, 10 year old German shepherd, and 5 year old cat. When we brought him home our German shepherd(f) took to him really well. The cats were mostly blasé toward him and stayed out of his reach. We got him neutered because we had no intention for breeding and we also didn’t want him marking/becoming territorial especially with other pets. However, I’ve noticed that even after being neutered, he still “marks”. I should mention that the other 3 pets passed over a course of 3-4 years. One to old age, one to stroke and another to something serious but undiagnosed before her passing. With the other pets around, and different living style, the marking was never noticed. Now, I’m divorced, and living in an apartment and when I take him on walks it takes forever because he wants to pee/mark every few steps. I told the vet about this and he just said “he’s neutered? That’s weird”. And nothing more. Thankfully he doesn’t do this indoors, but I was wondering if this is normal or something underlying. I’m a bit paranoid about his health as one of my cats ended up having a serious medical issue but passed before diagnosis/treatment. He’s only 6 now, but each of my pets passing has affected me deeply, especially as they happened within a somewhat quick timeframe.
