   Ideas for entertaining our dog while we work? - We have a 2 year old GSD, she’s incredibly smart, easy going, and eager to please. Right now she goes to daycare during the week, this is something we’d like to stop doing for a plethora of reasons. However, my fiancé isn’t convinced that she’ll be entertained enough at home alone. I’ve tried to tell him that I don’t think she gets a lot of interaction at the daycare, they try, but she’s kept separate since she’s not spayed yet (health reasons and breeder’s contract). From what it sounds like, she enjoys spending most of her day outside rather than in the kennel, understandable. I’ve thought of the following to set up for her: 1. Once or twice a week 1hr walks during the day via Rover, I normally walk her 30 mins to 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening after work. We also use this time to train, she loves it. I figured an extra walk twice a week would be a nice way to break up her day and get extra exercise in. 2. Puzzles, we have 4 puzzles for her already. She loves them, I’ve wanted to get her a few more to rotate out different puzzles. I figured maybe setting up 3-4 around the house for her to play with wouldn’t be so bad. 3. Snuffle mats, similar to the puzzles, probably just 1 out during the day. 4. Frozen kongs, we actually have the woofsicle thing. A bit easier for her so she doesn’t get as frustrated and walk away to forget about it entirely. I figured one in the kitchen would be good. 5. Go Dogo remote training treat dispenser, thought this was interesting. A bit more randomized for her, so I figured that would be nice. I can’t think of a lot more, she enjoys hide and seek with treats, but it’s like the puzzles and kongs, she’ll forget. We already have a minor mouse problem and I don't want to encourage them more than we already have. I just don’t know if maybe higher value treats would be the key or not, or if hiding treats like that would just encourage more inappropriate rummaging in other environments. Any recommendations are welcomed!

   All three of my dogs were neutered. My youngest one would pee (didn’t mark), and then her older fur sister would mark over her, and then my GSD (who was the same age as the older sister), he would mark over her. Now I only have the youngest and she has taken up marking since we moved to a new place. Neutering a dog doesn’t stop the marking

   I would say this is really not a good idea. Pets are difficult to maintain when you dont have time for them and they all require some amount of mental stimulation and interaction to have healthy social behaviours and remain happily occupied. I really wanted a bigger dog when I moved into my apartment but settled on a chihuahua mutt after some careful thought. Honestly i am very glad I didnt get a bigger dog because my chihuahua already has more than enough energy and attention needs. Animals also shouldnt be left alone for prolonged hours and need company the same way that we do to have good mental health. I have a similar situation to reflect on, an old friend of mine really really wanted a GSD as his first pet dog and I advised him that it would be a huge responsibility and that it was probably a bad idea. Of course he got one anyway and although he had a large backyard he did not dedicate enough time to it and it completely destroyed everything, ate holes in the plumbing pipes too. If youre looking for a dog that doesnt mind being left to nap, I'd look into adopting an older dog over the age of 5, dogs kind of require a lot of work and attention until they mature. That being said, dogs are not really going to be happy without company. Maybe get a more independent animal like a cat? or smaller animals that you can keep multiple of together like rats or rabbits, these are also wonderful companions that will be happy as long as you provide a stimulating environment and companionship. Having a dog is kind of like having a small child xD But if you are working full time, maybe you can afford to send your dog to a doggy day care multiple days a week to make up for it :)

   I also have an all black GSD, also with crippling separation anxiety lol. Age has helped, so has consistent routine, a dog door, and our other dog. I got him as a puppy and lived in the country at the time, he came to work with me every day and had never been alone in his life. I moved to a more urban area and worked from home during the week but had a waitressing job on weekends. The first day I left him alone in the house he opened a window, busted through the screen, jumped the fence, and came looking for me. Thankfully animal control picked him up and he was okay, but he could’ve easily been hit by a car or taken by someone or gotten lost. After that, I tried crate training and he also broke out of every crate I tried, and it became a safety concern—once I came home and he had chewed half the plastic tray of a wire crate and tried to bend the bars to free himself, and gotten his head stuck in the process. His paws and mouth were all bloody and I don’t know how long he was like that :( I hired a trainer to mild success but he still freaked tf out every time he was alone. Eventually I had to return to office so really had to figure out a system. The things that worked for me were thoroughly exercising him every morning before I went to work at the same time, on the same route. His walk was a job, and I used a joring harness to let him pull me through the neighborhood, which he actually really loves. He would use the bathroom and then I’d rollerblade with him for 3 miles, get home, and feed him. I’d follow a consistent routine of getting ready/making coffee/etc so he knew to expect when I would leave. I wouldn’t say goodbye or make a big deal when I left the house, and i wouldn’t greet him with any great emotion when I got home, simply say “hi, I’m back” in a neutral tone and ignore him until he was calm. This took big emotions out of me coming and going and it took a few months, but he eventually stopped getting so worked up when I’d leave. I put in a dog door once I could trust him not to jump my chain link fence, and eventually got another dog which I think also helped calm him down. I also got a long term partner and I think having to share my attention with others also helped chill him out a bit. He’s 8 now and is fine during the day if we leave him, but still freaks out and gets destructive if we’re gone for too long after dark and will shred paper/book/toilet paper, but if he were a little younger he’d probably still go for the drywall/doors. My other dog is a lab and could not care less about our comings and goings lol, a lab might be more suited to your lifestyle
