   The first 4 years with my dog i was able to go home during lunch almost every workday. The first 6 months i would additionally have a dog walker come aswell. So she was attended to twice during my workday. On top of that my work route was 10min. If you have a longer commute that adds a significant amount of time. If I wasn't sure whether I needed to work an hour extra, I would walk and exercise her for atleast 1,5h in the morning. Once a week she would be at dogboarding with 4 other dogs. So she could socialize and be mentally happier. I also had a small garden she loved. Saturday and Sunday mornings I usually spend in a huge park that transitioned into the woods for 2-3h. Or sometimes do hikes. Now i unfortunately had to move and have a longer commute. The first year I mosrly worked from home and would use the extra time to walk to a lake for her to swim etc. So 1h walk before work. Since I know I soon have to go into the office more often I already started to go to a dog club twice a week and organized a new dog boarding for once a week. Just need a dog walker for lunch. The most difficult part will be 1. The first year. You cannot leave a puppy alone without a dog walker for that long. You definetly need a walker. I stayed at home the first 4 weeks (took vacation days) and the 4 weeks after that a family member lived at my place. So only after 2 months i started the staying at home for the workday, but with 2 visits a day. And even then it was stressful. I bought a dog camera to be able to watch her in between. And twice I had to go home. Having to go home on time etc is a constant battle with my boss, who is annoyed that a single person can have a private live with responsibility even if i have no children. Friends and colleagues are annoyed that I cannot just go to an after work beer or directly to a concert etc. I always have to drive home first. And do activities that are dog compatible. Some people will be annoyed and dont spent time with you anymore. Also it is all very expensive. If you leave your dog at home alone 8h a day the dog will most likely develope behavior issues. And prepare for always structuring everything around your dog and always feeling inadequate not doing enough.

   My dog pees 4 times a day, can easily hold it overnight for 12+ hours (no, I'm not stopping him from going out, he's just too comfy to get out of bed in the morning), and has never had an accident when left alone but I don't leave him for longer than 5 hours. He costs 1/4 of what my large dog did at the vet (procedures, preventative medications, etc) He costs less at the groomer (small dog = smaller charge, at most groomers) He costs less in toys, he destroys his toys MUCH slower than a large dog and because they toys are small they are cheaper to purchase and easier to find. Beds are also much cheaper. He fits in the requirements for flying in cabin on an airplane so I can travel with him whenever I like He can be easily picked up in dangerous situations He is allowed in dog friendly businesses more readily than larger dogs He's easy to sleep with because he doesn't take up much space He's just as willing and able to train and learn tricks as all of my larger dogs have been, he can hike and run and do all of the things big dogs can. as for negatives? Teeth. They need their teeth brushed frequently, and even then you can expect dental issues pretty quickly. My dog got serious tartar build up on his larger back teeth before he even finished teething as a pup! They can be more fragile so if you have rambunctious kids you'll have to consider whether they can be trusted around the dog. Also, it can be hard to find harnesses that fit, he's only 7.4lbs and most "xs" harnesses are still too big for him. You likely won't have this issue with a 14lb dog.

   Absolutely.. I’ve noticed with my 7.5 Aussie that she’s getting sore and limping after long hikes now.. her shoulders.. been doing red light therapy on them and it seems to be a game changer

   Not too sure if it applies- but my dog started doing this and used to love hikes as well. I had both my dogs with me and we were walking a trail in thick shrubs (on leash) and both dogs froze. There was a coyote following us very close in the bushes. Ever since that day, my one dog was fine but the other stopped wanting to be in the forest. It was the same- super excited first 100m in and full stop. I didn’t push it and he eventually got over it towards the end of the summer. Do you think maybe something scared him at one point? Even if you never saw it?

   Yes I’ve had my dog for 13 years as a single person and it’s the best thing I ever did was getting her as a pup. I looked at Australian Shepherds but at the time I lived in an apartment so I decided to get a mini one instead of full size. I also think that was best for me too…smaller poops to pick up. She’s bigger than a purse dog so I don’t have to carry her around but also super active and we can go on hikes and walks and play frisbee and ball for hours. I used Rover.com for dog sitters and also took her to doggie daycares as a pup to wear her out and get her socialized. My friend has a German Shepherd and she rescued him and he’s a good boy but he’s a lot of work. She had a Chihuahua before so I can tell you she’s very much not able to handle her dog. So if you get one, my best advice is spend the money and get it professionally trained. It’s expensive but also best thing I ever did and to this day I still get compliments all the time how good my dog is.
