Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

My dog pees 4 times a day, can easily hold it overnight for 12+ hours (no, I'm not stopping him from going out, he's just too comfy to get out of bed in the morning), and has never had an accident when left alone but I don't leave him for longer than 5 hours. He costs 1/4 of what my large dog did at the vet (procedures, preventative medications, etc) He costs less at the groomer (small dog = smaller charge, at most groomers) He costs less in toys, he destroys his toys MUCH slower than a large dog and because they toys are small they are cheaper to purchase and easier to find. Beds are also much cheaper. He fits in the requirements for flying in cabin on an airplane so I can travel with him whenever I like He can be easily picked up in dangerous situations He is allowed in dog friendly businesses more readily than larger dogs He's easy to sleep with because he doesn't take up much space He's just as willing and able to train and learn tricks as all of my larger dogs have been, he can hike and run and do all of the things big dogs can. as for negatives? Teeth. They need their teeth brushed frequently, and even then you can expect dental issues pretty quickly. My dog got serious tartar build up on his larger back teeth before he even finished teething as a pup! They can be more fragile so if you have rambunctious kids you'll have to consider whether they can be trusted around the dog. Also, it can be hard to find harnesses that fit, he's only 7.4lbs and most "xs" harnesses are still too big for him. You likely won't have this issue with a 14lb dog.

I’ve had small dogs and large dogs. Small dogs can be harder to train simply because of how close to the ground they are. It’s not that they act different it’s literally just that it’s lowkey a pain to train so close to the ground. You also probably already experienced this because of your 25lb dog but the smaller a dog is the more likely it is for a larger dog to think they are prey. Of course no one takes warnings from small dogs seriously because they are small and can do minimal damage but it’s because of that reaction that so many little dogs turn out aggressive. If you wouldn’t tolerate the behavior from a large dog then don’t tolerate it in a little one.

Our dog park has two sections; one for smaller dogs and one for larger dogs. The owner is suppose to be nearby. If biting happens, the dog is banned

There is very strong evidence that LP is genetic. It is primarily a malformation of the knee. In theory, yes it is possible to acquire it due to trauma. But it has to be a significant trauma. It is not like with larger dogs where nutrition (including too much nutrients) and too much/inappropriate exercise can have a very big impact on things like hip dysplasia. What can also happen is that a dog ha a very low level LP. That has barely any symptoms, and then those symptoms become more visible as it gets older or has a trauma. But the underlying congenital abnormality was still there. You should always be careful with a developing puppy. Small breed puppies have smaller bones, they can break more easily. You should follow the normal rules that apply to all puppies, about not overexercising them and not do hard running on concrete. But there is nothing specifically that an owner can do to prevent LP. It is on the breeder to do pre-breeding LP screenings.

My 7 lb chi mix can definitely hold her pee or poo for a long time if she chooses to, like when it’s those times a year where there’s fireworks going off outside. A small dog is easy to just scoop up when they refuse to continue a walk. I personally like having a dog I can hold comfortably and fit in a sling bag so I can be hands free if needed. I can bathe her in the sink instead of bending over the bathtub. I spend less on food than I would a larger dog. And she’s good with a couple short walks a day.
