Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I teach inside first, and practise until they know it and can do it inside. Then we practise it outside. When I'm training first the dog is leashed and we do a lot of practise. I just put down a piece of kibble saying nothing, when pup went to get it I covered it with my hand so he couldn't get it. He would try, but then back off. Then I picked it up and gave it to him, good boy. Repeat this until he isn't trying to get it, waits for it. Now I start saying 'leave it' as I put it down, he knows the action so we are attaching the cue. Practise that until you don't need to cover it anymore, the dog leaves it. Then do it tossing the treat (not far) and saying leave it, it's harder because the toss adds excitement, expect to maybe back up a bit, and then try again. Lots of practise, adding more excitement by tossing a treat, another... build up the self control. Do it with a toy, drop something from the laundry 'leave it', in the kitchen, use it in daily life. When pup knows it well you can start to wean the treats, give them sometimes, not every time. But that's why I used kibble from his ration and kept some on me while he learned, so I could 'play' it a lot and reward it well, and he does think of it as a game. It's a useful game. But pup won't know the difference between his playthings and the kids stuff, get them to help so the puppy can learn, kids like to teach puppies. Leave it, off, how to wait and how to walk are the main first things I teach pup, and toilet training. These get them nice to live with, anything extra can be done in its own time.

I taught our pup 'leave it' and we practised it a lot (I used kibble), then once he understood it I could use it to let him know what not to do, or take. It worked well for us in and out of the house. He also learned 'drop it' but that was for things he got, that I didn't prevent. We didn't use that as much as I did want him to learn not to do or take rather than be continuously correcting him.

I think there may be a misunderstanding on why people recommend focusing on positive actions rather than negative. It's much easier for dogs to understand what they're supposed to do. Just telling a dog "no" doesn't really give them much information. Training them to "leave it" and positively reinforcing it is much clearer for a dog.

One good way of getting around some of it and also keeping people from trying to mess with your dog while you're training (yep. it's gonna happen) is pick a foreign language you like and teach them commands in that language. Some of the ones we use • With me/with= heel • NO MA'AM= Whatever you're doing is a big nono • Out= Whatever space you're in, move out of. Gets her out of the way easily without needing specifics. • Place = go sit on your bed/blanket/the area I'm pointing at. Super helpful when you're out in public. • Walk on = We've looked long enough, keep walking • Off = move off of whatever you're on. Not the same as lay down. IE if she's got her front legs on me I don't say get down, I say off. oh and I cannot emphasize enough how helpful and major this one was for us- leave it means leave it. Doesn't matter if it's a person or dog or piece of food on the ground or weird rock. If you can get that concept locked in early it helps them so much with impulse control long term. Happy training and smoosh the baby for us! 🤙

I have 7 dogs and they are all different ages, but all have most of the same commands. Sit, leave it, supper time (indicates both breakfast and supper) and off. Now, they all have different degrees of awareness of people's personal space and being in the way/underfoot. My old now deceased dog knew "move" whenever he was anywhere in my way. Walking to the kitchen during a commercial break and he's hot under my foot for a snack? "Move please" - 4 out of my 7 know move. 3 are completely oblivious to being in the way. And they think "move please" means "get in moms way more" so now I say "beep beep please" like a car horn beep beep. I used to tell my old guy "hurry up" for doing his biz outside. My now oldest dog knows hurry up, but also knows go go go which is how my sexond girl came to me already potty trained.
