Consider an older dog

No foster should be left outside all but 3 hours a day. Same for an older dog.

I think it’s fine to have a dog with that schedule but you need to get a dog that would suit your lifestyle, not try to fit the dog you want into your lifestyle. There are many breeds and older dogs who would be fine to nap during the day and be ready for play and cuddles when you got home. A GSD is not one of them. I would say the one workaround would be dog daycare while you’re at work maybe, but that is expensive.

This would not be a great idea, not for a puppy or young dog, and probably not a German shepherd. If you’re dead-set on a companion, an older an mostly trained dog would be a better fit. Young dogs need lots of attention and training, older dogs relax more and will be more content sleeping for those 8 hours that your gone.

Please consider going to the shelter and addopting an older dog. They will sleep all day and it is hard for them to get into homes.
