   Its hard to know. You were only two days in. It took me at least a year to get my dog to be a normal ish dog. Fortunately I was self employed so I could take him to work and put the time in with him to train. Not everyone has the time or resources for a puppy or rescue. Even if you got a dog without a history like the last one, dogs are animals and they do there own thing and can howl and destroy without past trauma.

   rescue dog issue or cocker spaniel issue? or both... - I just started a trial adoption with a 5-6 year old cocker spaniel through the humane society. I'm not sure how long he was on the street before he was taken to the humane society (he seemed in good shape) but I brought him home after he had been there for about 8 days. He is a really good dog -- gets along with other dogs, sleeps well, eats well, walks well on a lead well. He will sit and wait and lay down on command. All this seems great for two days out of rescue. He would not stay in the crate without hyperventilating and going in to all out panic so the first night I had him stay in the bathroom and he was fine. The second night he stayed in a dog bed on the floor in my room. I have another person in my house who is very sweet with him but I am the one who got him, walks him, and feeds him. So here is the issue.... he goes in to that same crate panic if I leave the room or put him in the yard without me. Barking and howling and in true panic mode. As soon as I come back, he is fine. But this is kind of impossible. I know it is day 2 so hoping someone here will tell me this will subside because he is a handful when he behaves like this.

   I gave my dog to a couple of friends for a week, it was absolutely fine. Then to my parents for a month and a half, when we met again my pup just wouldn't leave my shadow until i brought him home, but that wasn't really an issue. And finally I left him for two weeks at a foster home that he was used to going to for a couple days at a time, he didn't mind at all. That being said recently I had to use some kind of kennel for two days (the dog has his own fenced box apart from the other dogs) he didn't seem to enjoy the experience as much.

   He'll be fine, ears are dramatic but two days is nothing unless it's swelling or he's not eating

   Yeah, I think I needed to hear this. I’ve been looking at all the barking and reacting and immediately worrying that this is just how he’ll always be. It’s probably way too early to make that judgment after only two days.
